Kobach nominated to President Trump's voter fraud commission

Potential panel members include former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell and Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson, the official said. His work spearheading Trump's committee will be highly scrutinized from the outset, mostly because the initiative seems to have come about as a means of justifying the President's bogus charge that as many as 5 million "illegals" voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016. He has promised for months to investigate "election integrity".

During his campaign, Trump repeatedly alleged that the election system was "rigged" and after his election argued that such massive, widespread fraud kept him from the popular vote. "In addition to winning the Electoral College in a landslide, I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally", Trump tweeted in November.

Democrats have long accused Republicans of trying to suppress turnout among minority and low-income voters, sometimes by erecting barriers like requiring identity cards for voting and sometimes by intimidation.

Eyewitness News has spoke with a representative with the Secretary of State's office.

The bipartisan commission would not be limited to investigating Trump's election fraud claims but look at issues that have been raised over many years.

The secretary of state championed Kansas' proof-of-citizenship requirement as an anti-fraud measure that keeps noncitizens from voting, including immigrants living in the USA illegally. Dunlap said he gets along with Kobach, though he doesn't necessarily share many of Kobach's views on voter fraud.

"The commission will review policies and practices that enhance or undermine the American people's confidence in the integrity of federal elections", Sanders said.

"It should be no surprise that the election commission will not be looking at how proposed remedies will lead to eligible people not being able to cast ballots", Persily added.

The new commission comes at the same time as several investigations into alleged Russian meddling in last November's presidential election. He made the analogy of bagging groceries.

"If you are at the grocery store and you don't bag your own groceries you complain about it but it doesn't really change the fact that your eggs are broken right?" But Trump had an explanation: voter fraud.

"Preserving the integrity of our election system is vital", said Simon. And many of those who do care find themselves barred through burdensome voter-ID laws or have the power of their votes diluted through race-based gerrymandering.

During a January meeting with top lawmakers in Washington, Trump sought to back the claim by relaying a story purportedly told by a friend of German golfer Bernhard Langer, the product of an apparent game of telephone that Langer quickly disputed. "And I think having a seat at the table is a good thing, because sometimes if you don't have a seat at the table, you're on the menu". "Neither the White House nor Secretary Kobach reached out in any way to the group", Simon said. As part of his efforts to implement the requirement, he had to provide justification that non-citizen voter registration was a problem.
