Boko Haram releases 83 schoolgirls kidnapped 3 years ago

Meanwhile, the 82 abducted school girls released by Boko Haram at about 7.04pm on Sunday, May 7, arrived the Presidential Villa in Abuja to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari.

Eighty-two schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram militants in 2014, were freed Saturday in exchange for the release of suspected militants, according to a statement from the Nigerian president's office.

The girls met with President Muhammadu Buhari in the Nigerian capital Abuja, Sunday.

"Bring Back Our Girls" campaigners celebrate the release of the kidnapped Chibok school girls at the unity fountain in Abuja, Nigeria, Sunday, May.

A Nigerian military official with direct knowledge of the rescue operation said the freed girls were found near the town of Banki in Borno state near Cameroon.

In October, 21 of the girls were released following negotiations brokered by the Swiss government, the Red Cross and some local intermediaries.

Neither the Nigerian president nor Boko Haram, which has links to the Islamic State group, gave details on the exchange.

Two days after the release of additional 82 girls kidnapped from GGSS Chibok in Borno State, credible sources told the Daily Trust yesterday that the third part of negotiations for release of more of girls has commenced.

President Muhammadu Buhari is now receiving the 82 freed Chibok girls behind closed doors at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Numerous captive girls, majority Christians, were forced to marry their captors and give birth to children in remote forest hideouts without ever knowing if they would see their parents again.

They were from a group of 276 abducted in north-eastern Nigeria in 2014.

But AFP estimated that at least three suspected senior commanders, all of them Chadian nationals, were handed over.

"We will help reunite the girls with their families and make sure they can continue their education in a safe environment".

Bring Back Our Girls said it was awaiting an official statement but added: "Our hopes and expectations are high as we look forward to this news being true and confirmed".

But Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo had disclosed last month that negotiations were ongoing for the release of more Chibok schoolgirls still in the custody of the deadly terror group. Girls who escaped said some of their classmates had died from illness while others remained with their captors because they'd been radicalized.

Over the last eight years, an uprising by Boko Haram has left more than 200,000 people dead and 2.6 million forced from their homes.
