Day after Comey firing, Sean Spicer to miss White House briefing

White House press secretary Sean Spicer walks from the West Wing of White House, in Washington, Tuesday, May 9, 2017, to speak to reporters.

Her comments came hours after McCabe dismissed Sanders' eyebrow-raising claim that President Trump fired Comey in large part because "the rank and file of the Federal Bureau of Investigation had lost confidence in their director". This resulted in a hilarious picture that was sadly not captured thanks to Spicer's demands: reporters huddled in the bushes, asking questions to the Press Secretary in the dim evening light. From there, a familiar pattern ensued: a Trump tweet storm followed by more vagueness from Spicer. For months, the president's tweets have been only intensified by Spicer, who has been reflecting the administration's affinity for double-messages and disdain for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the press. "There is no there, there", Sanders insisted.

Spicer's replies overlooked that White House communications staff first told reporters that Rosenstein's memo, which criticized Comey's handling of the FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server, was the impetus for the firing.

Spicer: "We'll have a readout for you after that meeting ..."

A few minutes later, Time's Zeke Miller returned to the question: "Is [Trump] now recording conversations taking place in the Oval Office?"

Unidentified reporter: "What I'm asking is, the executive branch - the FBI has a separate investigation".

"We want this to come to its conclusion, we want it to come to its conclusion with integrity", she said, referring to the FBI's probe into Moscow's interference in last year's election. This new storyline had Trump deciding some time ago that Comey was a "showboat" and "grandstander" who had to go, but had asked for input from Rosenstein, to whom Comey reported and who has been on the job just a few weeks. I don't know. There's some - I don't know. "I'm not aware of that". "I'm not going to call the FBI and ask them what their investigation is, and then you'll write a story about how I called the FBI".

Tuesday: "This has nothing to do with Russia", White House counselor Kellyanne Conway told CNN.

Spicer: "I have no reason to believe - I haven't asked him". There's nothing there. We've heard that time and time again.
