Republican who revived health bill faces onslaught of anger

Rep. Tom MacArthur was responding Wednesday to an angry constituent who asked him how long he was going to "defend this American nightmare".

MacArthur was little known outside his district until he unexpectedly changed the course of American health care last month.

Vicky VanWright, 69, poses for a photo as she waits in line to attend GOP Rep. Tom MacArthurs town hall in Willingboro, N.J. MacArthur, a Republican who played a key role in helping the GOP-led U.S. House pass an Affordable Care Act replacement bill planned to meet with voters on Wednesday in his first town hall since the bill passed.

MacArthur repeatedly insisted that no one with pre-existing conditions will be declined coverage or priced out of being able to buy coverage under the GOP health care bill.

A potential Democratic challenger, Andrew Kim, who served as an Obama White House national security adviser, has said he's now more likely to challenge MacArthur next year.

The congressman said he would not denigrate an act of violence or a victim's experience by calling it a "pre-existing condition". "But when I drive across the Pinelands. for every one of you, there's someone who totally disagrees with you", the congressman said.

Inside certified medical assistant Geoff Ginter, 47, stole the show from the front row, subjecting a red-faced MacArthur to a 10-minute monologue lashing the health bill as "immoral". It's a notion that has caught fire nationwide through social media.

In another exchange, MacArthur cast his role in helping craft the bill as not allowing ideal be the enemy of the good ― arguing that members of Congress don't always "vote on the bill they wish was in front of them". "Yes or no?" demanded a 17-year-old named Daisy, drawing cheers from the crowd.

But the outrage in the room was hardly limited to health care. "However, the amendment would also dictate that health insurance offered to members of Congress and their staffs not be included in the exemption from covering pre-existing conditions". But a handful of conditions and interventions that can follow a sexual assault could have led people who were raped to be excluded from buying policies.

"I don't want a health care system where the only one making decisions is federal bureaucrats", he said.

Horvath-Cosper says some rape victims are given medications after the assault to prevent them from contracting HIV or other sexually transmitted infections. Pazera Cooke said that she was sexually assaulted 13 years ago and that she developed post-traumatic stress disorder. A group of demonstrators also held a "die-in" to protest the health care bill. They carried signs that read, "Killer Tom", "Health care, not wealth care", and "Stop Twitler now" ― a reference to the president and his active Twitter account.

"The Affordable Care Act has many flaws". MacArthur was met with headlines and business.as well as deeply personal stories that relate to challenge Republican fees in guiding alive and guarantees certain essential health benefits. And insurers are required to charge everyone of the same age, living in the same community, the same price.

MacArthur was one of only two Republicans among five from the state to back the House legislation, which would dismantle Democratic former President Barack Obama's signature law, sometimes called Obamacare. States are allowed to apply for waivers to exempt them from many of those federal rules. "When are you going to decide to be an American and not a politician?" As the Pledge of Allegiance came to an end, the crowd repeated the phrase "for all", emphasizing what they viewed as an unfair health care bill.
