Three big questions remain about Michael Flynn after Sally Yates' testimony

Three big questions remain about Michael Flynn after Sally Yates' testimony

Trump's detractors say it is beyond doubt that Muslims were the ban's intended target, but the administration says it is motivated strictly by national security concerns, an area where United States presidents have wide powers.

But it all keeps coming back to Russian Federation.

Yates, appearing before a Senate panel investigating Russian interference in the election, described discussions with Don McGahn, the Trump White House counsel, in which she warned that Flynn apparently had misled the administration about his communications with Sergey Kislyak, the Russian ambassador.

After warning the White House, Yates was sacked on January 30 for refusing to comply with an executive order barring travel from seven predominantly Muslim countries on the grounds thatthe ban was unlawful. Until then she had been a government lawyer who toiled in relative obscurity for most of her 27-year career in the Justice Department.

Yates explained what should have been self-evident: Not only were Pence and the American public entitled to know the truth, but the Russians also knew that Flynn had lied to the vice president - so the Russians had the goods on him.

"Immediately after the Department of Justice notified the White House counsel of the situation, the White House counsel briefed the president and a small group of his senior advisers".

Trump had also used Twitter before the hearing to insinuate that Yates had leaked information on Flynn to the media.

Yates was first brought into the DOJ during the George W. Bush administration and has been promoted successively since. After Attorney General Loretta Lynch stepped down, Yates took over the job on January 20 - Inauguration Day. Johnny Isakson, a conservative Georgia Republican, and was overwhelmingly confirmed in a bipartisan vote. Someone who is not exactly a supporter of the president's agenda who a couple days after this first conversation took place refused to uphold a lawful order of the president, who is not exactly someone that was excited about President Trump taking office or his agenda. "His transition team asked her to stay on".

What does Flynn's Russian Federation connection reveal about the greater Trump campaign's links to our longtime adversary? In a telephone conversation shortly before the announcement - monitored by USA intelligence as part of regular surveillance of Kislyak - Flynn discussed the measures and suggested the possibility of sanctions relief once Trump was president.

Putin, to the surprise of many, announced that Russian Federation would not retaliate.

But here are four reasons why the entire Russian Federation story - as it relates to the 2016 election, to former Trump National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, and to any allegations of collusion - isn't fake news.

Spicer insisted that Trump asked for Flynn's resignation because he misinformed Pence - not because of Yates' warnings.

All Cruz and Spicer have achieved is showing that Yates repeatedly and correctly stood up to an unpopular president and got her way in the end.

Two days after Spicer's comments, the president was asked about Flynn during a 77-minute news conference in the East Room of the White House.
