UBC economist says chance of Liberal majority just one in ten

Weaver wasn't ready to tip his hand on whether he would support the Liberals or NDP in a minority government.

"Site C is being constructed for an industry that does not exist, the LNG industry, and so desperate are the BC Liberals to actually land LNG that they sign contracts to subsidize LNG ... to the tune of 6 cents a kilowatt hour", said Weaver.

Political fundraising was a thorny campaign issue in the province The New York Times has called the "Wild West of Canadian political cash" because of "unabashedly cozy relationships between private interests and government officials".

Recounts and absentee ballots could still sway the final tally, such as with the Courtenay-Comox riding swinging to the NDP by a mere nine votes.

"I will work with the other parties to do what needs to be done", provincial Premier and Liberal Party leader Christy Clark told supporters, saying she meant to continue as premier.

Clark's Liberals won 43 of the 87 seats in the legislature, while the NDP had secured 41.

"The majority of British Columbians voted for a new government and I believe that's what they deserve".

We will have to wait for two weeks before the final result is known.

Solomon initially thought Grade 4 and 5 students might be too young for the vote, but she's since changed her mind.

But Weaver has also hinted that on economic issues his party sides with the Liberals. She was chosen as leader of the Liberals in 2011 and staged a come-from-behind victory in 2013, the Liberals fourth consecutive majority. Having doubled his party's vote count, tripled its seats - to three - and now seemingly holding the balance of power in a minority legislature, he was mounting the stage to deliver his victory speech. Bill Routley who won the seat for the NDP in the last two elections decided not to run again leaving a more open field.

The Liberals took 40.9 per cent of the popular vote compared to the NDP's 39.9 per cent.

With narrow margins in some districts, including Courtenay-Comox, a tally of absentee votes and ballot recounts starting May 22 could still determine the final victor.

The Liberals made the situation even worse by falsely calling Higgins an NDP member sent to confront Clark.

"There are people out there who feel that smear and slur are the ways to win elections", Weaver said after voting in his Victoria-area riding Tuesday.

In a country where most provinces limit donations to a few thousand dollars per donor, this year's campaign in British Columbia stirred controversy, with both the Liberals and NDP receiving contributions of tens of thousands of dollars. As Reid Fiest reports, a possible BC NDP and Green Party coalition could create obstacles for the already approved $7.4 Billion pipeline.

The party lost in the northern riding of Skeena, which the Liberals haven't picked up since 2001, but picked up seats across Metro Vancouver, knocking off four cabinet ministers, including Attorney General Suzanne Anton, TransLink Minister Peter Fassbender, and Naomi Yamamoto in North Vancouver-Lonsdale - a riding that hasn't gone orange since 1991, when the vote was split on the right.

British Columbia's election has brought unwelcome doubt for the business sector, given the prospect of an ascendant Green party influencing policy on pipelines, natural gas exports, hydroelectricity and other resource projects.
