BC has first minority government in 65 years

While Horgan said it's clear British Columbians want change after 16 years under the Liberals, Clark said she reads the result as a plea to the parties to work together. Clark asked Trudeau to ban thermal coal exports through her province in retaliation for United States duties on softwood lumber.

The results mark new territory for the Green Party, which has never had more than a single member elected to a Canadian legislature.

While saying the Green Party is focused on good policy and will work with either party, it certainly sounds like party leader Andrew Weaver has more in common with the NDP than the Liberals.

"I'm prepared to work with anyone who want to make life better for British Columbians", he said, listing a number of a pieces of the NDP platform.

Its leader, Andrew Weaver, a Cambridge-trained climate scientist who left an accomplished academic career to become a politician, had refused before the election to say which party he would support in a potential minority government.

The final tally has yet to be determined with a count of the absentee ballots and recounts in certain electoral districts.

A recount is ensured in the riding of Courtney-Comox on Vancouver Island because the NDP is hanging on by only nine votes. Premier Christy Clark now leads, with 43 seats as opposed to the NDP's 41 and the Green party's 3. "The people in Kootenay-East have made a decision, and they have decided with a party of free enterprise".

"British Columbians voted today to get big money out of politics", NDP Leader John Horgan told jubilant supporters Tuesday night. Under the watch of Clark, a former radio host who has led for six years, B.C. topped Canadian growth for the second consecutive year in 2016 and also led in job creation.

"LNG is not happening", he said on election night.

Clark acknowledged the race isn't over yet, and said she interpreted the initial results of the vote as a call for bipartisan cooperation.

"What a historic day for British Columbia", he said.

Greens hoped to gain another seat in Esquimalt-Metchosin - another vacant seat with NDP's Maurine Karagianis choosing not run for a fourth term.

This could also mean the end of the province's controversial Site C Dam project.

Greg D'Avignon, CEO of the Business Council of British Columbia, doesn't think a minority government with the Greens holding sway will necessarily stop major energy projects like the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion or the $36 billion Pacific NorthWest LNG project from going forward. If there are sufficient absentee votes to change the outcome in either Courtenay/Comox or Maple Ridge/Mission, the Liberals could obtain the 44 seats necessary for a majority.

A return of the BC Liberals tonight under Clark would largely maintain course, amid some promises to reduce MSP premiums and cap tolls on the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges.

"I suspect other parties would be crawling over themselves to offer us official party status in light of where we stand today".
