I Won't Judge Trump Until We Meet - Pope Francis

In Rome an artist painted a portrait of Donald Trump with a set of devil horns kissing Pope Francis on the mouth.

Francis spoke about the president Saturday as part of a press conference that also touched on a number of other issues, including the efficacy of his actions to prevent clergy sexual abuse, his view of the reported apparitions of Mary in Medjugorje, and his just-completed trip to Portugal.

In February 2016, Pope Francis openly criticized one of Trump's main campaign promises: that he will build a wall to keep illegal immigrants from crossing the US border with Mexico.

Trump immediately fired back, saying that it was "disgraceful" that Pope Francis would question his faith.

The pope also told reporters that he would keep an open mind and not pass judgement on Trump until first listening to his views at their meeting on May 24.

This one shows Francis, wearing a simple crucifix around his neck, embracing Trump, who wears a gold watch and sports a pistol in a holster.

Pope Francis, at least, says that he is withholding judgment until after he speaks with the president.

After hearing the description, the Pope famously responded that "a man who only thinks of building walls is no Christian".

Trump later responded to Francis' remarks in a Facebook post, warning that "if and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS".

Asked specifically if he would try to soften Trump's policies, Francis said: "That is a political calculation that I don't allow myself to make".

However, the pope said the delays in handling cases are due to the need to draft new legislation and to the fact that there are few people capable of handling cases of sexual abuse.

"There are always doors that aren't closed".

President Trump will meet with Pope Francis on the morning of May 24, midway through his first global trip.

In Saturday's in-flight press conference, NBC's Claudio Lavanga pressed the Pope further, repeating his question of how he would face a head of state with ideas in opposition to his (it should be mentioned that no journalist thought to ask the Pope this question regarding his meetings with Vladimir Putin, Raúl Castro, Evo Morales or Barack Obama). Also in the religious sphere: "I don't proselytize", he said. "Step by step, peace is crafted each day", he added.
