Hence, Microsoft has now not only encouraged users to download the fix they released for the vulnerability back in March but also created security patches for several now-unsupported versions of Windows, including Windows XP, Windows 8 and Windows Server 2003.

This malware attack that infected around 57,000 computers the world over, in the beginning, has now increased to over 2,00,000 in 150 countries including Russian Federation and the United Kingdom and is considered as one of the most widespread cyber attacks in history.

Organizations and networks worldwide have since Friday been dealing with the fallout of massive ransomware attack that exploited a hole in PCs running Microsoft Windows that haven't been updated.

Since then, over 150 countries have been affected, holding hostage computers which run integral parts of life such as factories, banks, government agencies and transport systems.

Smith said in a company blog post that governments should alert vendors to software vulnerabilities instead of hoarding them and keeping them secret.

Asian governments and businesses continued Monday to be disrupted by the WannaCry ransomware cyber attack that erupted Friday, according to media reports from China, Japan, South Korea, Viet Nam and India. An equivalent scenario with conventional weapons would be the USA military having some of its Tomahawk missiles stolen.

The original WannaCry ransomware may have been shut down but the cyberattack pandemic is far from over. "They need to take a different approach and adhere in cyberspace to the same rules applied to weapons in the physical world".

Experts were scrambling to determine who was behind the attack, which exploited a security flaw in older versions of Microsoft's Windows operating software.

In most cases, the software infects computers through links or attachments in malicious messages known as phishing emails.

The reason that so many computers were vulnerable is that fact that many computer systems overseas did not or could not install the latest security patch from Microsoft. In Australia, Cyber Security Minister Dan Tehan warned that there will always be threats of cyber attacks despite measures to intensify the country's cyber security. The hacking tool at work was originally developed by the U.S. National Security Agency, before it leaked online earlier this year.

One theory suggested that 90 percent of NHS trusts across the United Kingdom were using Microsoft's 16-year-old OS Windows XP, which could leave them susceptible to attacks.

The Indonesian government also urged companies to update their systems on Monday after two hospitals in Jakarta were hit by the ransomware.
