Microsoft says WannaCry ransomware must be a wake-up call for governments

Taiwan, Ukraine and Russian Federation were the major targets, although the virus is spread over a number of countries and the infection of computers over networks can be massive. The software held the victims' computers hostage and threatened to delete their files unless they paid $300.

The company also cited the recent WikiLeaks releases that included leaked code for CIA programs before declaring that government agencies need to start treating cyber weapons like missiles, adding extra protection. The law-enforcement investigation is ongoing, and may involve multiple national governments before all is said and done. "That's because they were running operating systems that Microsoft no longer supported, like Windows XP", Mathews continued. The tools were allegedly stolen from a different set of of hackers known as the Equation Group, which has been associated with the U.S. National Security Agency.

There were some unique aspects to the WannaCry attack.

"There are some rules and some policy that can be introduced where everybody knows how the government is going to handle these certain situations", said Greg Martin, CEO of San Francisco cybersecurity firm JASK and a former cybersecurity adviser to the FBI, Secret Service and NASA. As previously mentioned, this attack is particularly risky because it's also a worm, which means that once it gets into a computer it starts connecting to other systems to spread as much as possible.

"They're going to turn on their computers in the morning and find out if they were protected or not" said James Barnett, a security expert at Venable.

According to a PTI report, the government has claimed that ransomware has not touched Indian shores, with information technology minister Ravi Shankar Prasad stating there is "no major impact in India".

The identity of whoever deployed the software remains unknown. It has attacked hundreds of thousands of computers, security experts say, from hospital systems in the United Kingdom and a telecom company in Spain to universities and large companies in Asia.

Theft of the software was reported in April, when it was published by the Shadow Brokers, a group that has been linked to Russian Federation. Because numerous computers impacted run older Windows systems like XP, Microsoft issued a rare patch for XP, which it had stopped updating more than three years ago. Activating the domain worked as a kill switch for the malware. "As expected, the attackers have released new variants of the malware".

"I like a physical external backup, so an external hard drive that you connect and then can disconnect from the computer system and then don't keep it hooked up to the computer system because then that could also be affected", said Siewert.

Enable the "Show file extensions" option in the Windows settings on your computer.

If you find a problem, disconnect your machine immediately from the Internet or other network connections (such as home Wi-Fi).
