North Korea Missile Program Advancing Faster Than Expected, South's Defense Minister Says

Han said North Korea's missile development was progressing faster than expected.

The Rodong Sinmun daily called the new missile "Hwasong-12" and claimed it is "capable of carrying a large nuclear warhead" to the USA mainland.

"North Korea's latest successful missile test represents a level of performance never before seen from a North Koran missile", John Schilling, an aerospace engineer dealing with rockets said in an interview.

"The test-fire aimed at verifying the tactical and technological specifications of the newly developed ballistic rocket capable of carrying a large-size heavy nuclear warhead", it said.

The missile flew nearly 500 miles across North Korea and over water before slamming harmlessly into the Sea of Japan between Japan and Russian Federation.

7am BST: The White House said: "With the missile impacting so close to Russian soil - in fact, closer to Russia than to Japan - the President can not imagine that Russia is pleased".

In a unanimous statement backed by China, the council has promised strong measures in response to Pyongyang's "highly destabilising behaviour" and demanded a halt to "further nuclear and ballistic missiles tests".

The official [North] Korean Central News Agency said Kim "warned the US not to disregard or misjudge the reality that its mainland and Pacific region operations are in [North Korea's] sighting range for a strike and that it has all powerful means for a retaliatory strike".

It signaled to apply new sanctions.

But, he added: "We must stop intimidating North Korea and find a peaceful solution to this problem".

The Security Council has approved six increasingly tougher sanctions resolutions following its nuclear and missile tests. Spokesman Moon Sang Gyun said it is still unlikely that North Korea has re-entry technology, which would return a warhead safely back into the atmosphere. The missile fell in the Sea of Japan outside of Japan's special economic zone. South Korean President Moon Jae-in said the test was a "reckless provocation" and clear violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions. China really is the key in dealing with the North Korea issue.

Some experts said the missile, which was launched at a high angle, would have the same reach as an intercontinental ballistic missile if it were fired at a 30 to 45-degree angle.

"As South Korea's diplomatic situation matures, North Korea should also show a more mature attitude, not a childish one, and contribute to (establishing a better) diplomatic relationship", said Jin Hyo-seon, 33, a painter.

"It is considered an IRBM (intermediate range ballistic missile) of enhanced caliber compared to Musudan missiles that have continually failed", he said, referring to a class of missile created to travel up to 1,860 to 2,485 miles.

President Donald Trump's administration has called North Korean ballistic and nuclear efforts unacceptable, but it has swung between threats of military action and offers to talk as it formulates a policy. "Having a missile test is not the way to sit down with the president, because he's absolutely not going to do it", she told ABC.

This set of photos carried by North Korea's main newspaper Rodong Sinmun on May 15, 2017, shows a new North Korean mid-to-long-range ballistic missile, called the Hwasong-12, which was launched a day earlier. The USS Carl Vinson, an aircraft carrier, is also engaging with South Korean navy ships in waters off the Korean Peninsula, according to Seoul's Defense Ministry.
