Texas police change story in brutal murder of 15yo honor roll student

A suburban Dallas police force fired an officer on Tuesday for shooting a rifle into a auto of unarmed teenagers driving away from him, killing a 15-year-old boy and sparking outrage in the primarily black and Hispanic community where the incident took place. The police also did not reveal the race of the fired officer.

"After reviewing the findings I have made the decision to terminate Roy Oliver's employment with the Balch Springs Police Department", Haber told reporters.

"I take responsibility for that", Haber said, and added that Oliver's behavior "did not meet our core values".

The Dallas County district attorney's office and Dallas County sheriff's office are investigating the case. Police arrived at the scene to investigate an underage drinking complaint and spotted the vehicle leaving.

The suburban Dallas department had said Sunday in a news release that the vehicle, in which 15-year-old Edwards was the front-seat passenger, was "backing down the street towards the officers in an aggressive manner." . The other officer has not been identified.

The family later said that while they are grateful that Oliver has been fired, "there remains a long road ahead".

It is clear that Edwards' loving family wants to achieve justice for their son, whom they described as "a loving child, with a humble and sharing spirit".

As they arrived, the cops said they heard gunshots and came upon a auto containing Edwards and his friends.

This photo shows the intersection of Baron and Shepherd Lane on Monday, May 1, 2017, near where the shooting of 15 year-old Jordan Edwards by a police officer happened in Balch Springs, Texas on Saturday. "Their young lives will forever be altered". The officer ran out of the house and ordered the auto in which Edwards was riding to stop.

"They witnessed firsthand his violent, senseless, murder", Jordan's family said in a statement before Oliver's firing.

However, on Tuesday, Haber fired Oliver after an internal investigation into the shooting, the New York Times reported.

Members of the Next Generation Action Network met with local and state leaders Wednesday morning, including the Dallas County District Attorney, to discuss how they wanted the case to move forward. Prosecutors are now investigating the shooting and could bring charges against Oliver.

Police initially accused those in the vehicle with Edwards of driving toward cops "in an aggressive manner", then completely changed their story.

Authorities later admitted, however, that they had misspoken in recounting what occurred and that it appeared as though the vehicle Edwards was in was driving away from the officers when shots were fired, based on body cam footage.

"They have a dead child, they have the identity of the shooter, and they have no explanation for the shooting", Merritt said. "That excuse isn't here", Merritt said Monday at a news conference with the family.

"We do not support nor do we condone any violence or threats made against the Balch Springs Police Department or any other law enforcement agencies".
