Almost 1 million tune in to watch Derek Jeter's speech

Aaron Judge followed with his major league-leading 14th homer, a 441-foot drive off the padding above the center-field restaurant behind Monument Park, where a plaque honoring Jeter was to be unveiled during the ceremony before the night game.

Bregman homered just as Jeter was holding a news conference under the stands following the between-games ceremony, which came after the Yankees rallied for an 11-6 win in the opener.

Jeter, who played his final season in 2014 after a 20-year career in NY, became the 22nd player in franchise history to have his number retired.

Jeter said that he chose Mother's Day for the festivities to honor his mother.

In addition to having his number retired, Jeter received a ring, a blazer and a plaque that will be placed in Monument Park.

Jalen Jeter Martin has a very important question for Uncle Derek.

Introduced by a recording of late Yankee Stadium public address announcer Bob Sheppard — it was played before Jeters at-bats following Sheppards death in 2010 — Jeter wore a blue three-piece peak-lapel suit, white collared shirt and no tie.

Jeter's No. 2 was the last single digit number still available for players on the Yankees, winners of a record 27 World Series titles, five of which featured Jeter, who walked away from the diamond in 2014.

At the end of his speech, in front of his soon-to-be-larger-by-one family, Jeter talked about how lucky he was to be part of the Yankees family.

Some of Jeter's former teammates weren't in attendance for the ceremony, most notably Alex Rodriguez.

Hall of Famer Joe Torre called Jeter the greatest player he ever managed.

Of course, you can't honor a legendary baseball player without giving him a bunch of expensive gifts.

So Jeter did his best to stifle the laugh he felt upon official unveiling of the permanent reminder to the retirement of his No. 2 jersey, noting later that it was meant not to convey dissatisfaction with the rendering of his face, but rather relief that it was a likeness he could live with. "I can't thank you guys enough".

"It was always what we accomplished", Jeter said.

For me, there are two moments that will forever define what made Derek Jeter great.

Masahiro Tanaka (5-1) was to start the second game for the Yankees and Charlie Morton (4-2) for the Astros.
