ELECTION: 43 Liberals to rule as minority vs NDP's 41, three Greens

"If it's true that British Columbians voted for a change, that must mean, if you're Andrew Weaver, ousting Christy Clark from government", Johnston said Wednesday.

Prof. Richard Johnston of the University of British Columbia said that while the Greens share some common policies with the NDP on issues such as electoral reform, the party must evaluate whether it should back the party that didn't get the most seats or votes.

Its leader, Andrew Weaver, a Cambridge-trained climate scientist who left an accomplished academic career to become a politician, had refused before the election to say which party he would support in a potential minority government.

The final outcome of British Columbia's election will not be known until absentee ballots are counted.

The NDP won one riding by only nine votes, making a recount a certainty that will determine the difference between a minority and an ultra-thin majority if it were to flip to the Liberals.

When the election was called, the Liberals had 48 seats, the New Democrats held 35, the Green party held a single seat and there was one Independent.

Should the results as of midnight May 9 stand, the Green Party will be the deal-maker in any bill introduced in the legislature.

Both leaders are in communication with Weaver.

NDP leader John Horgan, meanwhile, is holding out hope that he will be premier once all ballots are counted, and recounted, by May 24.

Clark's Liberals won 43 of the 87 seats in the legislature, while the NDP had secured 41.

The votes are in, and Christy Clark will remain premier for the time being.

The results from Student Vote 2017 are in and students have voted in a majority BC NDP government. Before the results were announced, Olsen joked with Mike Schrenier, Green Party of Ontario leader, that the only pipelines they would build would transport beer between the two provinces.

Peter Fassbender, the Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development and the Minister Responsible for TransLink, has lost his seat, as has Suzanne Anton, the Minister of Justice.

"We're much closer on core issues like the environment", he said about New Democrats and Greens.

The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers industry lobby group, whose members depend on export routes such as Trans Mountain, said: "We're prepared to continue to advocate for our interests". The Green's Jennifer Holmes picked up 31 per cent of the ballots, with Simon Gibson of the BC Liberals tallying 30 per cent of the vote.

"On a political junkie's level, it's very exciting and it was an exciting evening", he said.

Clark maintained her focus on jobs and the economy on the campaign's last day by arguing that the other parties risk economic growth with promises that would run up the debt.

"What a historic day for British Columbia", he said.

Whether the Liberals will attempt to govern on an ad-hoc basis with case by case support of the other two parties, or seek a more formalized agreement with the BC Greens remains to be seen.

Hitting back at US plans to implement duties on Canadian softwood lumber, a key export for British Columbia, Clark said the Liberals would add a carbon levy on thermal coal exports from the province that would make them uneconomic.
