Google poised to roll out arsenal of services, gadgets

CEO Sundar Pichai will kick things off with a 90-minute keynote, which will be followed by a developer keynote, and several events running until Friday.

We should also get an update on the latest version of Android, called Android O, which is expected to launch this fall.

Google is unveiling the new feature at a conference in California on Wednesday. This year, the company has pre-announced Android O, the next version of its mobile platform, and has released the first "alpha" Developer Preview already.

Let's start with "Fluid Experiences", or aesthetic design tweaks to the operating system.

Google's digital assistant may soon make an entry on the iPhone.

There is pretty much a guarantee that the Assistant will get a lot of attention this time around, considering it is exactly one year now since it was launched. They include an updated version of the picture-in-picture mode (below) already available on some Android phones, which opens the door for multitasking opportunities like browsing the web while you're on a video call.

GE Appliances is today announcing integration with Google Home and Assistant, allowing voice control for its range of refrigerators, freezers, ovens, dishwashers, washers, dryers, air conditioners and more. The entire schedule for the Google I/O 2017 event has also been provided and you can find it here. If you tap on a name, street address, or phone number, it will also automatically display a suggested app, such as Contacts, or Google Maps.

But that should not stop us from predicting what we may get to see this year-updates for the Daydream platform, the Android Wear smartwatch platform, for Allo, Duo and other Google Apps, and perhaps even how Chrome OS and Instant Apps will evolve.

Google this week plans to show a device described by a source as the next step for these efforts but it's unclear whether the device will run on Android or make use of a separate operating system altogether. Think of it as a security hub for your phone, scanning your apps for malware and generally making sure your device stays secure.

Sandwiched between Microsoft's Build and Apple's WWDC, Google's developer conference takes place this evening.

Google says you can now type messages to assistant as well as speak them.

Pichai announced Google Lens, the company's take on augmenting reality using the camera app to recognise objects in the screen and provide essential suggestions. Keep in mind Google has always been working on Project Tango tech, which uses motion-tracking and depth sensing to build a 3D world onto physical surroundings, and at CES 2017, many manufacturers made announcements about AR devices, apps, and accessories.
