India To Build 10 Heavy Water Nuclear Reactors, Create 33000 Jobs

Each reactor will have the capacity to produce 700 MW of electricity. The 10 PHWR project will result in a significant augmentation of nuclear power generation capacity, " Coal Minister Piyush Goyal said here at media briefing on Cabinet decisions.

"A total of 7000 MW capacity will be added".

Westinghouse, owned by Japan's Toshiba, had been in talks with India to build 6 AP1000 reactors but the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March after revealing billions of dollars in cost overruns at its US projects, which raised doubts about whether it can complete the India deal.

Arun Velaskar, convenor of All India People's Inititive Against Nuclear Power (AIPIANP), an anti-nuclear advocacy group, said while several countries like Germany are moving away from nuclear power, the Modi government's decision to sanction new plants is "deleterious".

"The 10 new units will come up in a fleet mode as a fully homegrown initiative".

Goyal also said that nuclear reactors, which will produce 6,700 MW, are under implementation and these are expected to be completed by 2021-22. Goyal informed that the orders will generate approximately 33, 400 direct and indirect jobs in the country.

For years, India had been pushing to develop indigenous technology in nuclear power. With manufacturing orders to domestic industry, it will be a major step towards strengthening India's credentials as a major nuclear manufacturing powerhouse.

The release said the approval marks a statement of strong belief in the capability of "India's scientific community to build our technological capacities".

It also supports India's commitment to sustainable development, energy self-sufficiency and bolsters global efforts to combat climate change. It underscores the mastery our nuclear scientists have attained over all aspects of indigenous PHWR technology.
