Microsoft says WannaCrypt attack a wake-up call

The attack began in the afternoon of Friday, May 12. FedEx, Nissan, and the United Kingdom's National Health Service were among the victims. The discovery caused Renault to temporary shut down their factories in France. Generally, computer scientists will publicly reveal exploits, usually after informing the company of the issue and giving them time to fix it, so that they can be fixed in other systems, and the whole computer ecosystem can be improved. It spreads from computer for computer as it finds exposed targets, without the user having to open an e-mail attachment or click a link as is commonplace in most attacks. "Each country handles incidents of electronic crime differently, but in general most national law enforcement agencies urge companies to report incidents and avoid paying any ransom demanded", F-Secure Asia Pacific Head (Corporate Business) Amit Nath said. It has since impacted over 10,000 organizations and 200,000 individuals in over 150 countries.

The numbers can go up when people return to their offices on Monday.

"Otherwise they're literally fighting the problems of the present with tools from the past". Infections are not yet apparent but numbers are likely to rise as the workweek starts on Monday. That tool was stolen and made available by the Shadow Brokers, a hacking group that has released several caches of files from the government agency.

The advisory has been sent as a precautionary measure to all those who handle sensitive desks in the ministries of home, finance, defence, external affairs and security agencies.

Microsoft is now confirming that the WannaCrypt exploits used in the attack on Friday were drawn from the trove of exploits stolen from the NSA. This one worked because of a "perfect storm" of conditions, including a known and highly unsafe security hole in Microsoft Windows, tardy users who didn't apply Microsoft's March software fix, and malware created to spread quickly once inside university, business or government networks. Another domain registration blocked one but the other one has no kill switch.

The good news is that Bitcoin has not received the level of negative press and blame that it has experienced in the aftermath of previous cyberattacks. The ease of stopping the attack suggests the hackers were new to this game. But this in no way means that Apple users are not vulnerable to such cyber-attacks.

Europe's cross-border police agency chief Rob Wainwright said the attack was "unprecedented" and they are working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to identify those behind the malware who are now unknown.
