North Korea defends latest missile launch, seeks support

Lee reportedly said his trip to Beijing would focus on bilateral economic relations, tourism and differences over South Korea's decision to bring a USA missile system called THAAD to the peninsula in response to the North's missile and nuclear activity, which will also be discussed.

The missile was sacked from the region of Kusong, northwest of Pyongyang, where the North in February successfully test-launched an intermediate-range missile that it is believed to be developing.

The move came as North Korea's nuclear and missile programs are advancing, posing a threat to peace and security on the divided peninsula.

"The North Korean forces would more or less be wiped out, (and) the US and South Korea would be suffering from fatigue, both militarily as well as politically". Hong said South Korea had not yet received official word from the United States on whether Seoul should pay for an anti-missile US radar system that has been deployed outside Seoul.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley with Japan's U.N. Ambassador Koro Bessho (L) and South Korea's U.N. Ambassador Cho Tae-yul (R).

"Should North Korea conduct additional nuclear tests, then Japan would seek additional sanctions through fresh UN Security Council resolutions", he said.

U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley accused North Korea on Tuesday of intimidating the entire global community with its nuclear program, military ability and cyberattacks, and said any country that doesn't implement United Nations sanctions is supporting Pyongyang's actions.

Now, the missile test-launch by Pyongyang can be interpreted as an outright rebuff to Moon's goodwill rhetoric, indicating that the Kim regime is not going to go easy on the new government in Seoul.

Prof. Narushige Michishita says conflict with North Korea would unlikely lead to World War III.

Liberal South Korean President Moon Jae-in favors a softer approach to North Korea than his conservative predecessors and has offered to visit Pyongyang if the circumstances are right.

The U.S. Army forces carried out the exercise, called "Warrior Strike 7" at Camp Stanley in Euijeongbu, just north of Seoul, and the Rodriguez Live Fire Complex near the inter-Korean border, it said.

"President Trump talked largely about the big picture and stressed that we can achieve an outcome through the strong unity of the alliance and worldwide cooperation", Hong said.

David Wright, co-director of the Global Security Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists, said the missile could have a range of 4,500 kilometers (about 2,800 miles) if flown on a standard, instead of a lofted, trajectory - considerably longer than Pyongyang's current missiles.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters that the launch was "absolutely unacceptable" and that Japan would respond resolutely. He said Sunday's launch - the seventh such firing by North Korea this year - may have been of a new mobile, two-stage liquid-fueled missile North Korea displayed in a huge April 15 military parade.

The Security Council condemned Pyongyang's "highly destablising behavior and flagrant and provocative defiance" of resolutions passed previously demanding North Korean denuclearization, in a statement released to press Monday.
