Senators are ready for big push by Penguins

They expect nothing but the best from the Penguins in Game 2 Monday.

Not bad for starters, not bad at all. Ottawa Senators' Jean-Gabriel Pageau (44) celebrates with teammates Mark Stone (61) and Bobby Ryan (9) after scoring against the Pittsburgh Penguins during the first period of Game 1 of the Eastern Conference final in the National Hockey League. After finishing both the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins in six games, the Senators stole a road victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins last night to take a 1-0 series lead.

Taking the game into overtime tied at 1, they eventually dropped the ball and allowed the surprising Ottawa Senators to take a 1-0 series lead.

That said, I agree with Ary as I noticed something similar: the Sens were far less aggressive with their pinching, specifically in the neutral zone. Pittsburgh appeared to be feeling the effects of only having 72 hours to recharge after an exhausting seven-game series against the Washington Capitals, as Ottawa controlled the puck for most of the night, topping them a sizeable 49 to 34 in even-strength shot attempts.

Those sneaky Senators did it again.

"That's something we've learned throughout the season", said Smith.

"I knew right off the bat when we took a couple of penalties we had to be on our game", Anderson said.

"Us getting the first game, it gives us a little more confidence, but we know it's still a pretty big task ahead".

That was enough for Marc-Andre Fleury, who stopped 23 shots for his second shutout of the playoffs and 10th of his postseason career. Alex Burrows was there to put the puck in the net but the NHL's situation room ruled the whistle had been blown.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Mike Sullivan calls the energetic back-and-forth on the Pittsburgh Penguins bench "a man's argument".

That didn't sit well with the Senators or their faithful.

Boucher was impressed with the clubs effort, especially when the Penguins were awarded five power plays — including four in the first — and didnt score on any of them. No, the Senators can't tempt this kind of fate very often but Anderson made a huge glove stop on a deflection by Patric Hornqvist on the fifth power play of the night.

Though that's still true even after a loss in Game 1, the Senators have been outplaying their expectations throughout the playoffs. They simulated the Senators' trap during practice.

And it was a ghastly turnover from Dumoulin that led directly to Jean-Gabriel Pageau's game-opening goal with 5:28 remaining in the first period. The Senators went almost 19 minutes without putting a shot on Fleury.

Pittsburgh Penguins' Sidney Crosby (87) controls the puck as Ottawa Senators' Erik Karlsson (65) defends during the second period of Game 2 of the Eastern Conference final in the NHL hockey Stanley Cup playoffs, Monday, May 15, 2017, in Pittsburgh.

He had gotten help earlier when Ron Hainsey's shot from the point was tipped by Jake Guentzel off the crossbar.

So after playing teams in the first two rounds that came hard at them and pursued the puck, the Pittsburgh Penguins would gather the puck in their own zone in Game 1 and see their opponents skating backward.

"I think this is something that's crept into our game over the last few weeks". "They've got too many tools and players for us to start focusing on particular guys or start worrying about them every time they're on the ice". "So it's really about an investment, emotionally and otherwise, into this new challenge, and I think our guys are excited to play".
