US officials criticize Turkey after attack on DC protesters

Washington's Metropolitan Police Department said it had arrested two United States residents Ayten Necmi, 49, and Jalal Kheirabadi, 42, over the incident.

Washington police eventually sent reinforcements and restored order, but emergency services said nine people were taken to the hospital, one of them in critical condition.

Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser said she was working with Peter Newsham, chief of Metropolitan Police Department, to see what charges can be brought.

On the same day that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited President Trump at the White House, protesters were gathered at the Turkish Embassy in Washington, D.C.

"We are protesting (Erdogan's) policies in Turkey, in Syria and in Iraq", said Flint Arthur of Baltimore, Maryland. She said an Erdogan supporter attacked her. "They stopped us for a few minutes ... but we still stayed and continued to protest Erdogan's tyrannical regime".

Earlier on Tuesday, President Donald Trump met with Erdogan at the White House.

A video published by Voice of America appears to show men in black suits carrying Turkish flags - believed to be Erdogan's security detail - attacking individuals holding megaphones and protest signs. President Trump noticeably did not mention Turkey's widespread internal crackdown on human rights, which has led to the arrest of tens of thousands of journalists, academics, educators, and government and military officials.

"Erdogan's administration, however, considers the Syrian Kurds terrorists due to their ties to Turkish Kurds who have been waging an insurgency to create an independent state for the past three decades".

Erdogan who just secured sweeping powers following last month referendum, last week grilled Washington following decision by the Trump administration to arm the Syrian Kurdish fighters; Kurdish Peoples' Protection Unit (YPG) considered by Washington among best partners in the fight against Daech in Syria but vomited by Ankara as an extension of outlawed PKK.

Trump said Tuesday that the USA would ensure the PKK has "no safe quarter".
