Why Was James Comey Fired? President Trump Contradicts His Team

President Donald Trump is warning that former FBI Director James Comey "better hope" that there are no "tapes" of their conversations.

"James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"

President Trump indicated Saturday he will soon name a replacement for fired FBI Director James Comey.

Trump, referring to the FBI's investigation into Clinton's use of a private email server during her time as secretary of state, however said that the steady flow of news surrounding that probe helped him as a candidate in the 2016 presidential election. They include Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, the FBI's Acting Director Andrew McCabe, former Justice Department official Alice Fisher and New York Court of Appeals judge and former U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia. But Trump on Thursday acknowledged for the first time that the Russian Federation investigation - which he dismissed as a "made-up story" - was also on his mind as he ousted the man overseeing the probe.

Trump and Comey's relationship was strained early on, in part because of the president's explosive and unsubstantiated claims that Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower. Schiller was among those Trump consulted about Comey and was tapped by the president to deliver a letter informing the director of his firing. Trump said in one of a string of Twitter messages.

The White House Correspondents Association objected to Trump's threat.

In a series of early morning tweets, Trump assailed critics and the media over their response to Comey's ouster, and threatened to cancel daily news briefings at the White House.

The president was no kinder to Comey on Thursday, calling him names and saying he'd left the Federal Bureau of Investigation in "virtual turmoil".

Spicer was back to answering questions Friday about Comey's firing. In his interview with the president, NBC's Lester Holt asked of he was anxious about the optics of Mr. Comey's firing and his meeting with the Russian foreign minister.

Vice President Mike Pence told reporters, "President Trump made the right decision at the right time to accept the recommendation of the deputy attorney general and the attorney general". Fearful that his own team would leak the decision, Trump kept key staff in the dark as he pondered the dramatic move.

But the blowback from Comey's firing left the White House reeling once again.

The White House said Trump is weighing options for replacing Comey, a decision that could have broad implications for the future of the Russian Federation investigation. Some senior officials have discussed nominating Rep. Trey Gowdy, the South Carolina Republican who ran the House committee that investigated Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's actions in connection with the 2012 attack on a USA compound in Benghazi, Libya. He said there has been no interference so far. Lindsey Graham of SC, who heads one of the congressional committees investigating Russia's interference in last year's election.
