ABC to Bring Back American Idol

ABC to Bring Back American Idol

More details, including when the new season will premiere on ABC or who the judges could be, have yet to be announced.

Just a year after the series finale aired on Fox, one of the longest running singing competition shows on TV is coming back.

ABC outbid Idol's original network Fox to secure the right to revive the franchise, which ended its storied 15-season run in 2016.

"American Idol on ABC...that has a nice ring to it", Ben Sherwood, co-chairman, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney|ABC, said in a statement.

While some fans were overjoyed to hear about the revival of the series, former executive productive of "American Idol" Nigel Lythgoe told Variety he isn't in favor of the show returning just yet. "We are thrilled viewers will once again share in these inspiring stories of people realising their dreams".

"But over its last few seasons - as it cycled through judges, and rival competition shows like "The Voice" slowed its momentum - the show's audience collapsed". Since its inception, it has introduced singer superstars like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Jennifer Hudson. ABC has reportedly beat Fox and NBC for the reboot.

It's official! After days of speculation ABC has closed the deal to be the new home of American Idol.

ABC and ABC News are both part of parent company Disney. The host is still undetermined, but newly-minted ABC personality Ryan Seacrest's co-host Kelly Ripa would love for him to return.

Trent Harmon was named the victor of the 15th and final season of "American Idol" on Fox. TMZ reposted that Seacrest "seems interested" in returning to "Idol", though on Monday he played coy on Live!, saying, "I don't know if I can host it".
