Chaffetz to resign, raising doubts about Trump probe

U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy has the inside track to become the next chairman of the House Oversight Committee, succeeding Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, who is retiring next month, according to a news report Thursday.

Chaffetz, who is chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, announced earlier this year he would leave Congress at the end of his term in April.

It is unclear if there is an immediate cause for Chaffetz's expected announcement. He wrote at the time, "let me be clear that I have no ulterior motives".

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert, a Republican, said he spoke with Chaffetz on Wednesday but said he doesn't know what the Chaffetz' plans are for leaving Congress.

Washingtonian magazine reported last week that Chaffetz has been telling colleagues that he will take a role at Fox News after his resignation on June 30.

On Tuesday, Chaffetz demanded that the FBI turn over all documents in its possession concerning communications between President Donald Trump and recently fired FBI Director James Comey.

"I hope whoever replaces me will do even better", Chaffetz said in his letter to constituents today.

The Utah Republican, who had just started his fifth term in Congress, used his post as chair of the oversight committee to doggedly investigate Hillary Clinton before the 2016 presidential election and raise his political profile.

Chaffetz says he's skeptical about the report about the Comey memos but was concerned enough to launch the probe. "There's always a laundry list of literally hundreds of types of investigations that are going on", Chaffetz said.

Chaffetz appears to be committed to finishing congressional business before he departs from his seat.

Chaffetz said then that the GOP's since-failed Obamacare replacement would force low-income Americans to choose between investing in health care or buying "that new iPhone that they just love".

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said Thursday that he had not spoken to Chaffetz about his intentions.

Chaffetz is head of a committee that is the House's investigatory arm into the Executive Branch. On Thursday, the Republican Gowdy released a statement saying he was talking to other members about the chairmanship.
