Chelsea Manning is a Free Woman

Chelsea Manning has walked out of a U.S. military prison, seven years after being arrested for passing secrets to WikiLeaks in the largest breach of classified information in U.S. history.

The ex-intelligence analyst - known as Private First Class Bradley Manning - acknowledged leaking the materials and said it was an attempt to expose what she believed was the U.S. military's apparent disregard for the effects on civilians.

"After another anxious four months of waiting, the day has finally arrived", Ms Manning said of leaving the United States military prison in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

There's so much wrong with this, I don't know where to begin.

"I appreciate the wonderful support that I have received from so many people across the world over these past years", Manning said in a statement.

The former member of the U.S. military was given a 35-year sentence in 2013 before former president Barack Obama granted her clemency during his final days in office.

Manning also provided Wikileaks with detailed records about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and with files detailing the treatment of detainees at Guantanamo Bay.

Critics said Manning's leaks laid bare some of the country's most-sensitive secrets and endangered information sources, prompting the US State Department to help some of those people move to protect their safety. She also is still legally entitled to military medical care and commissary privileges, according to the Army. The day after she was sentenced, Manning revealed that she was a trans woman and changed her name from Bradley to Chelsea.

The money will pay for Manning's living expenses for her first year out of prison.

April 20, 2011: Manning is transferred from Quantico to an Army prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and is allowed to live with other inmates.

Military prosecutors had argued that Manning's leaks severely damaged USA intelligence.

WikiLeaks surprised Chelsea Manning on his first day of release from prison with a donation drive that generated the equivalent of around $850 USA dollars in the cryptocurrency Bitcoin. "I have never made any excuses for what I did", Manning wrote in her petition in November to have her sentence commuted. She tried committing suicide twice, according to The New York Times.

To facilitate her return to civilian life, a program called "Hugs for Chelsea" has raised more than $100,000 so that she can find housing and private health insurance.

"I think he or she should not have been released as soon", said Marian Onamer.

Manning will remain in the military for now, unpaid.

Chase Strangio, a transgender advocate and staff attorney with the ACLU, said in a statement that Manning demonstrated "strength and heroism" through her struggles in prison.
