Donald Trump: FBI inquiry is 'biggest witch-hunt in history'

Donald Trump: FBI inquiry is 'biggest witch-hunt in history'

"There is no collusion between certainly myself, and my campaign, but I can only speak for myself, and the Russians - zero".

They included Mr Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey, reports that Mr Trump had previously pressured Mr Comey to end a probe of former national security adviser Michael Flynn, and Trump discussing sensitive information on Islamic State with Russia's foreign minister.

"If I were Mr. Mueller I would jealously guard the witness pool", Graham said.

Congressional investigators "will have to be very leery of crossing into Mr. Mueller's lane", he said.

Mr Mueller, who is a widely respected figure who enjoys bipartisan support, will have sweeping powers and the authority to prosecute any crimes he might uncover.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced Wednesday that former FBI Director Robert Mueller will oversee the probe.

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., said Democrats should take a lesson from the appointment of a special counsel.

In a written statement, Mr Trump insisted again that there were no nefarious ties between his presidential election campaign and Russian Federation.

Once again, Trump's tweets on Thursday saw him stake out a radical departure from the official White House line on an important issue, a habit that has repeatedly undermined his press operation in recent days, and made it even more hard for his administration to move on from a string of self-imposed crises. "In the meantime, I will never stop fighting for the people and the issues that matter most to the future of our country". Mr Comey is said to have declined, and only offered his "honesty".

The South Carolina Republican said he wasn't able to ask specifically if it was now a criminal probe "but the takeaway have is everything he said was that you need to treat this investigation as if it may a criminal investigation".

Comey's dismissal and Trump's remarks appear to have helped sway Rosenstein's mind as he contemplated appointing a special counsel.

Associates of Mr Comey has also claimed that the president asked him to pledge his loyalty shortly after taking office.

But he disputed early White House claims that a memo Rosenstein had written that was critical of Comey had been the genesis of Trump's decision to fire the Federal Bureau of Investigation head.
