Donald Trump to launch panel to investigate voter fraud

Donald Trump to launch panel to investigate voter fraud

The commission is being led by Vice President Mike Pence and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who is a vocal advocate for restrictive voting laws.

So we're dismayed, though hardly surprised, to see that the Kansas secretary of state will be vice chair of President Donald Trump's incorrectly labeled "Commission on Election Integrity". "[It] shall be exclusively advisory and shall submit a report to the President that identifies. laws, rules, policies, activities, strategies, and practices that enhance the American people's confidence in the integrity of the voting processes used in Federal elections".

"This action by President Trump fulfills another promise made to the American people", Pence said in a statement.

Christy McCormick, a former Justice Department attorney and a member of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, will also be on the panel, and others will be named soon.

Trump's commission comes in the wake of allegations by this president that "millions" voted illegally in 2016, thus denying him the majority of the popular vote. "I am not certain what more the White House could do to signal its utter disregard for the democratic process in this country", said Rep. John Lewis (D-GA).

When democracy is limited, politicians lose their accountability, and issues that affect the lives of the American people lose their relevance in the corridors of power.

Trump claimed, with zero evidence, that "millions" of people "voted illegally" in the 2016 election - his excuse for why he lost the popular vote to Hillary Clinton. We expect the report will be complete by 2018.

Clinton, however, won almost three million more votes than Trump in the popular vote.

Kobach, for his part, claims that the commission had not been put in place to validate the president's allegations of voter fraud but would instead "go where the facts lead".

In February, Mr Trump claimed he would have also won New Hampshire if it had not been for voters bussed in from outside the state. "I hope that this investigation is not a fig leaf for voter suppression and intimidation".

"Further, it's extremely hard to see how Trump's proposed commission can be objective and impartial given Secretary Kobach's leadership role".

The secretary of state championed Kansas' proof-of-citizenship requirement as an anti-fraud measure that keeps noncitizens from voting, including immigrants living in the USA illegally. It was his eighth voter fraud conviction since getting the power to pursue such cases in 2015.

In a statement before Trump signed his order, New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman (D) said that "no matter how many times President Trump claims otherwise, voter fraud is an imaginary problem".
