Fiat Chrysler seeks diesel emission certification from EPA

Fiat Chrysler seeks diesel emission certification from EPA

FCA says the filing "is the result of many months of close collaboration between FCA US and EPA and CARB, including extensive testing of the vehicles, to clarify issues related to the Company's emissions control technology".

Jeeps and Ram pickups with the company's 3.0-liter diesel engines are one step closer to going back on sale in the USA after the automaker announced Friday it would resubmit those vehicles to federal testers.

M - Amid investigations into alleged emissions violations from its 3.0-liter diesel V-6, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles said it's asked regulators to greenlight the sale of the engine in certain model-year 2017 vehicles with updated emissions software.

In addition to the fines, the beleaguered German automaker has agreed to pay $14.7 billion to fix or buy back about 475,000 rigged 2-liter diesel vehicles and $1.2 billion on 80,000 3-liter diesels.

The Auburn Hills, Michigan, company said that if its application is approved by the agencies, vehicle owners would be able to get the software updates at their dealerships, but did not give a time frame.

The move follows reports this week that indicated the company could face a federal lawsuit if no agreement is reached soon on resolving alleged Clean Air Act violations involving previous year diesel models. Fiat said in its statement it "believes that these actions should help facilitate a prompt resolution" with the Justice Department.

And the evidence has piled up that those high emissions levels were part of efforts to evade environmental standards.

If the application, which was filed Thursday, is approved, it would be good news for consumers who have been forced to wait for a 2017 Grand Cherokee or Ram 1500 diesel for months.

Academic researchers on both sides of the Atlantic separately said this week that they found that Fiat Chrysler's diesel vehicles had suspiciously high pollution levels and that there was evidence the company had used a so-called defeat device, software meant to allow a vehicle to pass official emissions tests while polluting more when driven on the highway. The EPA has launched an investigation as to whether FCA's emissions system includes a "defeat device" - an illegal feature that limits the effectiveness of emissions control systems under normal driving conditions. A diesel Jeep Grand Cherokee produced up to five times as much.

Researchers from the University of the Ruhr in Bochum, Germany, and at the University of California, San Diego, said this week they found evidence of a defeat device in a diesel Fiat 500X, a compact SUV sold in Europe.
