Fox News co-founder Roger Ailes dies at age 77

Roger Ailes, former chief executive of Fox News, the powerful cable news channel for conservatives that helped reshape the USA political landscape, has died at age 77.

Fox News on Thursday reported that Ailes had died at age 77 following complications from a fall at his home in Florida on May 10.

(Gabriel Sherman of NY magazine was the subject of particularly intense pushback.) It may be no coincidence that this combative response to critics is a hallmark of the 45th president, whose campaign Roger Ailes advised both before and after his forced pasture as Fox News chief. "Roger was a loving husband to me, to his son Zachary, and a loyal friend to many. Roger was a patriot, grateful to live in a country that gave him so much opportunity to work hard, to rise - and to give back".

GREENE: So a celebrated figure among many conservatives, but just remind us about the headlines of the past year which were different. "On the one hand, you could argue that it helps the plaintiffs in these lawsuits because Roger Ailes isn't there to respond, so you're only going to hear one side of the story".

"From my perspective as a broadcaster, his biggest influence was blurring those lines of entertainment and news", said Scott Sands, senior vice president of programming for I Heart Radio's cluster of Toledo stations and afternoon host on WSPD-AM 1370 and FM 92.9. Three potential candidates, maybe more, might have had a greater chance to win if their views had been given more coverage.

Recently, people have asked me if I feel vindicated that what I wrote about Ailes years ago is now accepted as truth. I hoped the publication of my book in January 2014 might spur women to come forward. On weekends, he phoned friends to vent about me.

The Aileses moved to Garrison in 2007 and a year later purchased the weekly Putnam County News & Recorder, based in Cold Spring. But for the past week, with (U.S. President Donald) Trump mired in scandal, MSNBC has out-rated Fox News in prime time in the so-called 'demo'. The couple moved to Florida late past year and sold the paper to its editor. His political operatives prepared a 400-page dossier to serve as a source text for anonymous writers to smear my reputation online, often in anti-Semitic ways. Ailes fell in his bathroom, hit his head and was bleeding profusely.

Last summer, the world learned why Ailes was so terrified about having his life made public.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is adding his voice to those mourning Fox News Channel founder Roger Ailes.

Former anchor Andrea Tantaros and contributor Julie Roginsky have claimed in lawsuits that Ailes harassed them and that Fox News retaliated against them for rebuffing him.

Ailes returned to OH only occasionally for high school reunions, but when he did, he was widely welcomed. In what biographers have said was his "Rosebud" moment, his abusive father told Roger to jump from his bunk bed into his father's arms.

Ailes spent much of the winter in Florida, McLean said.

In 1962, after graduating from Ohio University, Ailes landed a job at The Mike Douglas Show. Ailes replied, "Television is not a gimmick".

"Mr. Nixon, you need a media adviser", Ailes declared (according to Sherman's biography).

During a four-minute tribute on his podcast Thursday, O'Reilly praises Ailes as a visionary and someone who "didn't take any guff from the left or the right" politically.

CBS News, for example, grew to prominence in the 1930's, as Hitler was conquering Europe; ABC News became a major player when Roone Arledge used the network's prime-time profits in the late 1970s to hire star talent and create new vehicles, most notably "Nightline". I'd worked Democratic political campaigns a couple of decades earlier, but I can remember a few times offering a plausible case for President Clinton's impeachment.
