Judge confirms Prince's 6 siblings as heirs to his estate

The six heirs to the Prince estate have been officially determined.

Kevin Eide, the judge in Carver County where Prince died suddenly past year at his Paisley Park estate, said that the "Purple Rain" star's heirs were his sister Tyka Nelson and five half-siblings.

Although Judge Eide rejected those other claims, he acknowledged some are under appeal, and said he'd reconsider them pending any appellate court ruling. But lawyers for Prince's siblings didn't want to wait, saying further delays would have increased costs to the estate and impede its efficient administration.

Attorneys for those who did appeal had said their interests would be harmed if the district court didn't wait out the appeals process before naming the heirs.

More than a year after the musician's death, District Court Judge Kevin Eide ruled on Thursday, May 18, that the Purple Rain star's estate, valued to be hundreds of millions of dollars, will go to his six siblings, ABC News noted. Because Prince did not leave a will, federal and state estate taxes are expected to consume about half the value.

Prince died in April 2016 at his home inside Paisley Park in Chanhassen, Minnesota, of an accidental overdose of Fentanyl. Beginning in the weeks after his death, an assortment of people have come forward, claiming to either be related to Prince or to have some other legal claim to the estate. The motion will be presented before Judge Eide on May 31.

Universal earlier this year announced with fanfare that it had secured the rights to Prince's catalog after the mid-1990s, when the singer exited rival label Warner, as well as unspecified recordings from Prince's earlier heyday.

The filing also affirms that former estate special advisor L. Londell McMillan will serve as the business advisor to three of the heirs: John R. Nelson, Sharon Nelson and Norrine Nelson.
