Labour officials veto councillors' extraordinary coalition deal with the Tories

Labour officials veto councillors' extraordinary coalition deal with the Tories

The Herald revealed yesterday that as many as six councillors were on the cusp of quitting Labour, with the departure of stalwart leader Eddie McAvoy opening up personality and political divisions within the group, including entering into a coalition with the authority's resurgent Tory group.

He said: "We'll work through it and I'm confident that we will be back in Labour very soon".

"They haven't been anywhere near as good as many of their supporters had hoped back in 2007".

Ms Dugdale will also highlight key election promises for Scotland in the "radical and transformative" United Kingdom manifesto launched by party leader Jeremy Corbyn on Tuesday, including opposing a second Scottish independence referendum, introducing a £10 real living wage, creating a Scottish Investment Bank and having a People's Constitutional Convention.

Ms Dugdale said that "Labour values must always run through any deals in local government".

She told ITVNews: "The reality is in this election the Tories only want to talk about independence because they don't want to talk about their record and they don't want to talk about their policies".

The SNP had become the largest party on Aberdeen City Council following the May 4 local elections, which saw Nicola Sturgeon's party return 19 representatives. I want free, high-quality education where kids in poor areas don't have worse results than kids in richer areas.

The Conservative manifesto says an independence vote "cannot take place until the Brexit process has played out, and it should not take place unless there is public consent for it to happen".

"Kezia Dugdale has shown her true colours", the Scottish Tory leader said.

Party bosses handed out the punishments after Labour members at Aberdeen City Council defied a ruling by the Scottish Executive Committee and signed up to coalition deal with the Conservatives.

"She really is lost".

A Labour descent into "civil war and bloodletting" will leave SNP MPs the only real opposition to the Tories at Westminster, Nicola Sturgeon has said.

He said: "This is absolutely shameful behaviour from Labour".

"The SNP won this local election in Aberdeen decisively, yet we face being locked out of office by a Labour Party that is now committed to cutting public services rather than engaging with our progressive programme to improve people's lives across Aberdeen".

In a slight shift from the European Union referendum result in Scotland, in which 62% voted remain and 38% opted to leave, 57% said they now think Brexit is wrong while 37% said they believed it was right.

"There are a few SNP politicians who have called him out, but [many] have actively encouraged him along".

An attempt to form a coalition with the four LibDem councillors proved fruitless.

New LibDem councillor Jennifer Stewart yesterday resigned the party whip to join the two other members of the independent alliance in the administration.
