Nottingham Forest takeover: Evangelos Marinakis buys club following EFL approval

His buyout brings to an end Fawaz Al Hasawi's five-year reign in charge of the Championship side.

Forest said its new owners were not "liable to be disqualified under the test" by the English Football League after the suitability of directors was assessed.

A US-based consortium failed with a takeover attempt of the two-time European champions in January.

In an exclusive interview with BBC Sport, Marinakis said that allegations he is involved in a "criminal organisation" were invented by "jealous" opponents to "destroy" his success with the Greek champions.

He has also been accused of involvement in bombing a referee's bakery but did not have to face any action.

Marinakis is joined by Greek investor Sokratis Kominakis and has bought 100 per cent of Nottingham Forest's shares.

He denies all claims made against him and has not faced any charges.

Evangelos Marinakis' first announcement included a promise to cut season ticket prices for next season, a new board including a chairman and a pledge to appoint ex-players to other senior roles.

"Forest is one of England's oldest clubs and one with a proud history of national and global excellence". Forest is one of England's oldest clubs and one with a proud history of national and global excellence. Our objective is to bring back the glory days.

The EFL has approved the deal after reviewing the business plan and applying the owners' and directors' test.

Stanley said: "The allegations cannot be ignored, we have to look at what it means for the football club, if you look at the structure that Marinakis has put in place, if something was to come to fruition from the allegations, that he firmly denies, then we are insulated to some degree because he is not involved in the day-to-day running of the club".

Marinakis, under whose aegis Olympiakos have won seven league titles since he became owner in 2010, says Forest deserve to be in the Premier League but accepts that it may take time - they only avoided relegation to the third tier League One on the last day of the season.
