Paris protest shows the challenges ahead for Emmanuel Macron

Macron defeated far-right leader Marine Le Pen handily in Sunday's presidential vote, and now must pull together a majority for his year-old political movement by mid-June legislative elections.

"He has been reporting on the French election from the start and has had direct access to Macron and many on his team, making him perfectly positioned to get to the bottom of who Macron is, and what he might plausibly achieve as president of France".

Macron, who will be inaugurated this Sunday, is now looking to use his popularity to win hundreds of seats for his fledgling party En Marche! in legislative elections, in little over a month from now.

"The next challenge for Macron is going to be the parliamentary elections in June, and given that there's a lack of significant support, it remains highly uncertain whether the President can build a parliamentary majority".

The incoming president will appear Monday alongside current President Francois Hollande in commemoration of the end of World War II.

On Monday, though, Hollande gripped Macron's arm before the two men walked side by side.

"Giving up on it altogether would well and truly disqualify us", he tweeted. And her campaign director David Rachline on Monday repeated Le Pen's stated view that the euro was an economic "dead weight".

Macron enjoyed a meteoric rise from nothing to president of a major European country, Schirach pointed out.

Earlier, Le Pen told supporters she had called to congratulate Macron after exit estimates projected her heavy defeat.

France's incoming president Emmanuel Macron has an ambitious economic agenda and a favourable economic environment and business leaders' backing in his favour - but can he bring change?

Macron ran as an independent, but he founded En Marche! less than a year ago. All 577 seats in the Assembly are up for grabs.

Since the first round of the election, Macron has accused Russia of meddling in his campaign with cyberattacks and has refused to accredit Russian media outlets RT and Sputnik, accusing them of issuing fake news stories. Macron has promised that half of those candidates will be new to elected politics, as he was before his victory Sunday. Several voters told CNN they would back just about anyone to keep Le Pen from the presidency.

Macron is a former investment banker who was projected as the pro-business and pro-EU candidate, contrary to his opponent Le Pen who had declared that France would exit European Union if she won.

With almost 11 million voters, she doubled the total achieved by her father in the second round of the presidential election in 2002.

The euro has made strides while Asian stock markets surged following the French presidential election result - seen as a boost for stability in Europe. He also wants to extend social protection to the self-employed. 'I was afraid Marine Le Pen would win, I was even having nightmares about it.' Philippe said: 'I'm very happy.
