Syria says US airstrike killed several soldiers near Jordan

A military source on the Syrian government side said the air strike had hit "one of our military points", without elaborating, Syrian state TV reported.

"On Thursday at 16:30, the so-called global coalition attacked one of the Syrian Arab Army's positions on the Al-Tanf road in the Syrian Badia region, producing a number of martyrs and causing material damage", a military source told Syrian state media.

"In every meeting we remind the attendees that there is terrorism by terrorists and also terrorism by states committed against our country", al-Ja'afari said.

Russian Federation on Friday condemned strikes by the US-led coalition against Syrian forces as "unacceptable", state media reported, after the bombing of pro-government troops.

He was referring not only to Thursday's strike but also to others carried out by the US-led coalition in recent months that have killed civilians in areas held by IS.

"Such actions that were carried out against the Syrian armed forces. this is completely unacceptable, this is a breach of Syrian sovereignty", deputy foreign minister Gennady Gatilov was quoted as saying by state-run RIA Novosti in Geneva. The coalition's headquarters argued that the forces had posed a threat to the United States and its allies.

Coalition warplanes targeted a convoy of Syrian government forces and Iranian-backed militia close to the Iraq border on Thursday.

"This action was taken after apparent Russian attempts to dissuade Syrian pro-regime movement south towards At Tanf were unsuccessful, a coalition aircraft show of force, and the firing of warning shots", the coalition said in a statement.

"They were potentially probing to see how close they could get to al Tanf", an anonymous U.S. official said. A road between Iraq and Syria would facilitate the flow of assistance from Iran, which is a strong backer of Assad.

The area around Tanf, where the borders of Jordan, Syria and Iraq meet, has been considered a de-conflicted zone, under an agreement between the U.S. and Russian Federation that came into effect earlier this month.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said the U.S. would defend its troops in case of "aggressive" steps against them.

We review the key developments in Syria, including Syrian and Russian anger over a USA airstrike, the walkouts threatening to derail Geneva peace talks and defeat for ISIS following its bloody raids on two central Syrian villages.
