Trump on Asking for Comey's Loyalty: 'I Didn't'

- The chairman of the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee says he doesn't think the FBI investigation into alleged links between President Donald Trump's campaign and Russian Federation is the reason Trump fired FBI director James Comey.

Trump's tweet came the morning after he asserted Comey had told him three times he wasn't under FBI investigation. At a one-on-one dinner at the White House in January, Trump asked Comey to pledge his loyalty to the president and Comey declined, instead offering to be honest with him, according the person, who requested anonymity to discuss private conservations.

But Burr also said Trump's recent tweet about Comey was "inappropriate".

Associates of the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director, who remained out of sign today at his suburban Virginia home, said they believed any recording would validate Comey's side of the story.

"As a very active president with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with ideal accuracy!" he tweeted on Friday.

Democrats are irate over Comey's abrupt ouster, and demanding Trump not nominate a partisan leader.

"The credibility gap between the Trump administration and the American people continues to grow each day with each new revelation", he said. Trump tweeted. "Maybe the best thing to do would be to cancel all future "press briefings" and hand out written responses for the sake of accuracy???"

The photos of the United States president's meeting with the Russian foreign minister presented by TASS photographer Aleksandr Shcherbak triggered an unexpectedly harsh response from some USA mass media. "If there's tapes of this conversation, they need to be turned over".

The White House released a short statement May 9 announcing that the president had terminated Comey based on the "clear recommendations of both Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions". Under an onslaught of Republican criticism, Comey says that to charge Clinton would have been unwarranted and mere "celebrity hunting".

The top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, Rep. Adam Schiff, also called on Comey to testify before his panel. When Trump then pressed for "honest loyalty", Comey told him, "You will have that", the associates said. Trump has said a decision could come before he leaves Friday for the Mideast and Europe, his first overseas trip as president. "In fact, when I chose to just do it, I said to myself - I said, you know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story", Trump told NBC.

The White House denied the account. "If the election were on October 27, I would have been your president", she tells a women's luncheon in NY.

Democrats quickly seized on the dispute, demanding the White House turn over any tapes that might exist of the president's conversations with Comey.

The swirling controversy has obliterated any momentum from the House passage of the Republican health care bill last week and threatens to overshadow Trump's first worldwide trip, beginning next week, in which the president will meet with leaders in both the Middle East and Europe. He also led the FBI's global Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and Antitrust Programs. And while 61% of respondents said Trump's decision did not change their opinion of the president, 30% of respondents said they had a less favorable impression of Trump now, versus just 6% who said they had a more favorable view.

That's far different from the White House's initial account in the hours after Comey's firing. Sessions has since recused himself from Trump campaign-related investigative matters - though reports in the news media suggested he had a role in Comey's removal.

While Democrats have called for an independent special counsel to investigate the Russian Federation matter, most Republicans have said that is not necessary given the FBI probe and investigations in both the House and Senate.

May 3, 2017: Testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Comey insists he was consistent in his handling of the separate investigations into Clinton and Trump.

"I'm not under investigation", Trump added.
