The attack led to around 40 trusts across the country being shut down by what's known as ransomware - a virus that locks the user out of their computer unless they pay a fee to regain access.

Following a meeting of the Government's Cobra contingencies committee, Home Secretary Amber Rudd said more than a million patients had been treated in the course of Monday.

And he defended the Government after a National Audit Office report in November warned that taking money away from NHS services would leave them vulnerable, telling BBC Breakfast it was down to individual trusts to protect against vulnerabilities and insisting they had enough money to protect against cyber attacks. On Saturday, Interior Minister Amber Rudd said that 97 percent of the nation's health service trusts were "working as normal".

A number of hospitals in England and Scotland were forced to cancel procedures after dozens of NHS systems were brought down in Friday's attack.

A GLOBAL cyber attack that has struck computers across Europe and Asia is believed to have infected its first Australian business, the federal government says.

It said in a statement: "NHS Digital issued a targeted update on a secure portal accessible to NHS staff on April 25, and then via a bulletin to more than 10,000 security and IT professionals on April 27 to alert them to this specific issue".

Technology powerhouse Microsoft have also responded by re-releasing security updates for older versions of their Windows software in order to mitigate further outbreaks.

"The advice for patients remains to attend your hospital or GP appointment as usual unless you have been contacted and told not to".

Seven hospital trusts were still experiencing problems earlier on Monday, among them St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, and Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust.

At NHS Western Isles, the radiology system has been affected and while it has had no impact on the care delivered locally, a spokesperson said it has affected their ability to share images with mainland Boards.

"One of the most common methods of infecting computer systems is through links and attachments in emails", Matheson said.
