Colorado expecting as much as 3 feet of snow in certain areas

The late snow caused all kinds of problems, including power outages, snapped trees that couldn't withstand the heavy snow on top of their fresh spring leaves, road closures, school closures and some high schools even had to reschedule and relocate graduation ceremonies at the last minute.

The high country - from Silverthorne and Vail to Snowmass and Crested Butte - is also under a winter storm warning, where up to more than two feet of snow could drop.

The ski area just south of Loveland Pass is the only one in Colorado that is still open for the year, and is hoping to reap the benefits of staying open so late. The heaviest rate of snow and greatest chance of slippery conditions around Denver will continue through Friday morning.

The worst is yet to come for towns on the Front Range such as Conifer and Nederland, John Kyle, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, said Thursday evening.

A-Basin woke up to 9 inches of new snow Thursday morning, and another 10 inches had fallen by 4:30 p.m., with more expected into Friday.

Nineteen inches of snow fell on Arapahoe Basin on Thursday. The rate of snow may be too much for snow removal crews to keep roads clean. Thousands of people were without power as the heavy snow weighed down power lines.

A May snowstorm continued to pound the central and northern Rockies on Friday, a day after burying portions of Colorado under three feet of snow.

It will be mostly sunny on Saturday with a high of around 55 degrees.

There will be plenty of melting with temperatures climbing to 40 degrees.
