Fired FBI Director Comey To Testify Publicly About Trump, Russia Probe

Former FBI Director James Comey will testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee in public sometime after Memorial Day.

"Director Comey served his country with honor for many years, and he deserves an opportunity to tell his story".

"The President has always emphasized the importance of making deals with Russian Federation as it relates to Syria, Ukraine, defeating ISIS and other key issues for the benefit and safety of the American people".

Other news reports have alleged Trump had previously asked Comey to stop the investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

The New York Times, citing an unnamed American official reading from the transcript of the meeting to their reporters, reported that Trump boasted about the firing of former FBI Director James Comey to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak while referring to Comey as a "nut job".

"Among the concerns that I recall were to restore the credibility of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, respect the established authority of the Department of Justice, limit public statements and eliminate leaks", he said, echoing the sentiments he had outlined in a May 9 memo that the White House released publicly that day and cited as the basis for the firing. "He was insane, a real nut job", Mr Trump said, according to the document, which was read to The New York Times by a U.S. official. It says the president then told Russia's foreign minister and ambassador that he "faced great pressure because of Russian Federation".

"Congress is going to want to look over the shoulder of this investigation", said Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., who was an aggressive chairman of the House oversight committee during the Obama administration.

On Friday, members of Congress said, Rosenstein clearly defined his role in Comey's dismissal, telling the assembly that while he had written a memo criticising Comey's flouting of Justice Department rules for his public revelation of aspects of the Hillary Clinton email probe, it was not intended as a justification for firing Comey.

It has also been reported that Trump had told the Russians classified information about military operations involving Isis. His testimony provides fuller details about Trump's termination of the top law enforcement official investigating whether his campaign colluded with the Russian government to influence the outcome of the 2016 election.

Mr Rosenstein said, although he was personally fond of Mr Comey, "I thought it was appropriate to seek a new leader".

The White House has struggled since Comey's firing to explain the chain of events that led to it and the Justice Department's involvement in that decision. But he added, "I wrote it".

Cummings called Trump's reported comment "astonishing and extremely troubling".

The paper named Mr Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson as officials still in post with acknowledged contacts with Russian operatives.
