Former FBI head appointed to oversee Trump-Russia probe

Former FBI head appointed to oversee Trump-Russia probe

"There is no collusion between certainly myself and my campaign, but I can always speak for myself, and the Russians - zero".

A small but growing number of Republican US lawmakers called on Wednesday for an independent probe of possible collusion between President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign and Russian Federation, spurred by a memo from the fired FBI chief that Trump had sought to impede the agency's investigation.

Putin, who still hopes Moscow can fix battered ties with the United States despite a deepening political scandal in the United States related to Trump's purported Russian Federation ties, said Moscow had rated Lavrov's meeting with Trump highly. Trump wrote yesterday morning.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said she was "pleased" that the Justice Department had chose to appoint a special counsel, and called Mueller "a respected public servant of the highest integrity".

U.S. intelligence suspects that Russian President Vladimir Putin orchestrated a sweeping campaign to tilt the vote in the Republican's favour.

The incident, and Trump's response to it, shows he has no understanding of nor concern for the security of American citizens, one of his top responsibilities as president.

The details of Trump's conversation with Comey come from a series of memos allegedly written by the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director after a meeting with the president in February, following the resignation of Flynn.

It later emerged that Comey had made notes of his meetings with Trump, who reportedly asked him to quash an investigation into Flynn's contacts with foreign governments.

Democratic lawmakers for weeks have been calling for the appointment of an independent prosecutor to head the investigation, particularly since Mr. Trump abruptly fired former FBI chief James Comey last week in the middle of the agency's probe into Russia's involvement in the United States elections and the Kremlin's links with the mogul's presidential campaign. "Well I think the President lost patience and I think people in the Justice Department lost confidence in Director Comey himself", he said. "We need the facts".

Senator Richard Blumenthal of CT, a member of the Judiciary Committee, called the memo as reported "powerful evidence of obstruction of justice".

"Our job is to get the facts", he said.

The bombshell Comey news came as the beleaguered administration was still struggling mightily to explain Monday's revelation that the president had disclosed highly classified information to the Russian foreign minister and the country's ambassador to the United States.

The series of bombshell allegations has left Trump aides dazed and wondering about the future of his young presidency.

And he adopted a skeptical tone toward the reports that have the White House in chaos and lawmakers scrambling to respond.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that Mueller's appointment "confirms that the investigation into Russian intervention into our election will continue, as stated last week by Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe".

The appointment of Mueller as special counsel will raise the intensity of the investigation and make it less vulnerable to political interference.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who named Mueller to lead the probe, briefed USA senators on Thursday.

Fighting back against multiple crises has consumed much of the political oxygen inside the White House, leaving Trump's agenda in doubt. "That doesn't seize up Congress". But given the bombshell news events since Ryan last went before the Washington press corps almost two weeks ago, the questions did not focus on the major legislative effort he's trying to pursue.
