France's Hollande greets Macron in first meeting since victory

France's Hollande greets Macron in first meeting since victory

But he faces a tall order to secure the majority he needs to push through his ambitious agenda of labour, welfare and education reforms.

With virtually all votes counted, Macron had topped 66 percent against just under 34 percent for Le Pen - a gap wider than the 20 or so percentage points that pre-election surveys had suggested.

Their frostiness stems in part from Mr Valls's refusal to say whether he would formally join Mr Macron's République en Marche party.

Macron's movement is banking that voters, having elected him, won't want to see his presidency hobbled so quickly.

The pomp of the ceremony, at the imposing Arc de Triomphe at the top of the Champs-Elysees Avenue in Paris, immediately helped lend a presidential air to the previously untested leader who fought and won his first election.

On Monday, he appeared alongside the man he will succeed as president, President Francois Hollande, at the commemoration of Victory in Europe day on May 8, 1945.

Claiming a "massive" result of 10.64 million votes - a record for the FN - she promised "a profound transformation" of the party to grow its appeal.

Trump, who had hinted at support for Le Pen during the campaign, tweeted congratulations to Macron on a "big win" and said he looked forward to working with him.

France's two-round voting system makes it hard to project the final result, with parliamentary elections often yielding several three-way races where two parties ally against a third, typically the National Front.

"If Macron fails, then the next president will be Marine Le Pen and we need to prevent this at all costs", he added.

Macron will also become the first President from outside the two traditional main parties since the modern republic's foundation in 1958.

His newly renamed grassroots movement, "Republique en Marche" (Republic on the Move), which was founded only 13 months ago, will finally reveal the vast majority of the 577 candidates who will stand in parliamentary elections in June.

Macron is courageous leader and rejected the traditional politics.

A spokeswoman for Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said strengthening the euro zone would be one topic that he would discuss with his new French counterpart once Macron has installed a new cabinet. He clinched 18 percent of the vote in the 2002 presidential elections - the first time that National Front made it to the final round.

Macron aims to neuter the opposition by luring moderates from both left and right.
