Interviews well underway for new FBI director

And while 61% of respondents said Trump's decision did not change their opinion of the president, 30% of respondents said they had a less favorable impression of Trump now, versus just 6% who said they had a more favorable view.

Reports published Thursday, citing unnamed sources close to Comey, said Trump invited Comey to dinner and then asked Comey to promise he'd be loyal to him. "You can't fire the guy investigating you and that's a lot like what we saw from the Nixon administration". The FBI has been investigating alleged Russian meddling in the US election and possible ties between Moscow and the Trump campaign.

Amid criticism that White House representatives and the president himself have repeatedly contradicted each other, Donald Trump on Friday said it's not possible for them to take to the podium "with flawless accuracy".

The CNN host tried to get Swalwell on record as to whether there exist grounds for impeachment.

"I don't think that's a threat".

"The American people deserve answers".

The president tweeted early Friday, "James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"

"We had a very nice dinner and at that time he told me you are not under investigation", said Trump.

Trump made the remarks to reporters prior to speaking to about 50,000 people at Liberty University in Lynchburg, where he did not mention Comey or the controversy his dismissal on Tuesday caused. Critics of the Trump administration's handling of the Russian Federation investigation have long held the view that a special prosecutor is needed.

The former prosecutors who signed the letter include Benito Romano, the district's interim U.S. Attorney during President George H.W. Bush's administration; Robert Cleary, who served as U.S. Attorney in New Jersey after working in the NY office; and Richard Ben-Veniste, who was a special prosecutor during the Watergate scandal and later served as a member of the bipartisan commission that investigated the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Trump's tweet about his press team comes amid criticism that the White House press office and the president have repeatedly contradicted each other.

"In fact when I chose to just do it, I said to myself, I said, 'You know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story, it's an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won", the Republican president told NBC.

In response to the media coming out and questioning the differences in the responses, President Trump threatened to take away press briefings and defended his administration.

January 27, 2017: At one-on-one dinner at the White House, Trump asks Comey to pledge his loyalty to the president and Comey declines, according to a person close to Comey, speaking after the Federal Bureau of Investigation director was sacked. Meantime, Spicer denies that Trump asked Comey during a dinner to pledge his loyalty to the president.

Trump refused to talk about the possibility of recordings during an interview with Fox News Channel.

Democrats have found an ally in the Senate's Republican chairman of the intelligence committee.
