Landslide in Uttarakhand leaves several tourists stranded

Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has directed the Secretary of Disaster Management Department, Amit Negi, to monitor the situation.

From last few years, frequent landslides and floods are observed in Uttarakhand which put thousands of pilgrimage stranded and lives of tens of people lost.

"No one was stranded, there were no unfortunate incidents, 1,800 tourists (against the reported 15,000) were affected and arrangements were made for them", Rawat tweeted.

According to officials, the landslides drifted huge boulders from mountain, resulting in the blockade. "Looking at the amount of debris lying on the road, we are going to take at least two days to open the road and make a bypass for vehicles to move from both sides", said colonel Rama Subramanian, BRO Commandar.

Around 1500-1800 tourists were feared stranded after a landslide occurred near Vishnuprayag in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district, blocking the Rishikesh- Badrinath National Highway. The highway has remained closed near Vishnuprayag, one of the five confluences of the Alaknanda river, between Joshimath (also known as Jyotirmath) and Badrinath.

District Magistrate Ashish Joshi said that Border Roads Organisation personnel are engaged in clearing the roads.

The landslide happened during the ongoing "Chardham Yatra" when nearly 2.5 lakh pilgrims have visited the sacred temples in the state so far. "The pilgrims have been asked to stay at their places and nor proceed until the road gets cleared".
