Macron and Merkel to 'reconstruct' the EU

Macron meets Merkel on first official visit as French PresidentIn Berlin, Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel welcomed France's new President Emmanuel Macron, one day after his inauguration.

"We need a less bureaucratized Europe that would be able to better protect its citizens", Macron said. France's new President Emmanuel Macron secured backing from key ally Chancellor Angela Merkel for his bid to shake up Europe, despite scepticism in Berlin over his proposed reforms.

"We share the common conviction that we can not only focus on Great Britain's departure from the European Union, but rather we have to discuss ways to deepen our cooperation among the remaining members of the European Union, among the members of the Eurozone", she said.

The statement says Macron and his newly named Prime Minister Edouard Philippe want to take the time to verify tax records and possible conflicts of interest.

More than 20 French media organizations have signed an open letter to France's new president, Emmanuel Macron, to express concerns about restrictions on coverage.

And, despite the smiles on Monday, Mr Macron has yet to prove himself.

Macron's defeat of far-right candidate Marine Le Pen in a run-off vote this month was greeted with relief by pro-EU political forces rattled by a surge in populist, Euroskeptic sentiment across the continent, including last year's Brexit referendum vote approving Britain's departure from the bloc.

"I am not a promoter of the mutualisation of old debt" within the euro zone, he said after meeting Dr Merkel, adding, however, that the joint financing of future projects should be considered.

"I must, in France, lead deep reforms, which are necessary for our country but necessary also for the full restoration of Franco-German confidence", he said.

"And if in this process, there must be institutional changes and new treaties, we are ready", Macron said. Macron insisted that the European Union should do more to protect itself against dumping.

His appointment was seen as a strategic move by Macron, who is trying to woo modernisers of all stripes to his new centrist party, the République en Marche (Republic on the Move, REM), having already won over dozens of moderate Socialist MPs.

Although he won the May 7 election against National Front candidate Marine Le Pen with 66% of the vote, his party was only founded past year and has never held a single National Assembly seat.

The polling data does not forecast the number of seats REM and its allies would win in the 577-seat National Assembly, which is hard to predict because of France's two-round voting system.

"Macron clarified his position, saying he did not want Eurobonds or the mutualisation of (eurozone) debt" said Demesmay, referring to the pooling of funding and the build up of previous loans.

Merkel will be buoyed by his remarks as she basks in the glory of winning three consecutive regional elections, in Schleswig-Holstein, Saarland and the crucial state of North Rhine-Westphalia - which is the most populous state of Germany and includes Dusseldorf, Bonn, Cologne, Dortmund, and Essen.
