Man Arrested After Attempting To Breach Cockpit During Flight To Honolulu

Hawaiian Air National Guard F-22 jets were scrambled to escort American Airlines Flight 31 after a man reported to be Turkish tried to break through the cockpit door of a commercial plane flying from Los Angeles to Honolulu. He was involved in another incident early Friday morning that caught the attention of law enforcement, according to airport police at Los Angeles International Airport.

The airline said Flight 31, an Airbus A321 aircraft, landed safety at Honolulu International Airport at 11:35 a.m. local time.

An official who was not authorized to speak publicly about the incident told the AP that the passenger was subdued by a crew member and another passenger who was a retired law-enforcement officer. The sheriffs along with other law enforcement agencies responded to the scene as is normal procedure.

"The flight attendants just were really heroic", Passenger Lee Lorenzen said.

Allison Forburger, who lives in Hawaii, where she works for the Navy, said the man was moving toward the first-class section of the cabin with a blanket over his head when a flight attendant directed him to stop. The FBI says it is interviewing him.

Police say a man who caused a disturbance on a flight between Los Angeles and Honolulu had been arrested hours before his flight for opening a door that led onto an airfield ramp. Federal agents met the plane from Los Angeles when it landed in Honolulu and took the man into custody.

A flight attendant said it must belong to a man in the bathroom. Before the flight to Hawaii, Uskanil was arrested about 2:45 a.m.

The man did not fight with the other passengers and left a black laptop he had been clutching to his chest on the drink cart, she said.

One of the passengers who helped was an off-duty law enforcement officer, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

"Crazy! Someone tried to break into the cockpit on my flight from LA to Honolulu", the Instagram user wrote.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly was briefed on the incident, according to a statement from the department.

According to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security, "The aircraft is now on the ground, and the individual who disrupted the flight has been detained".
