Michael Flynn Stalls Senate Intelligence Committee

Ousted National Security Adviser Michael Flynn will not honor a subpoena issued by a Senate committee looking into Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election, the panel's chairman said Thursday.

Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina broke the news of Flynn's failure to comply with the probe.

Burr told reporters earlier on Thursday that Flynn's lawyers had said he would not honour the subpoena issued in connection with the committee's investigation into Russian Federation and the 2016 United States presidential election.

Meanwhile, the House Intelligence Committee on Thursday asked the Justice Department and the FBI for documents, also requested by other congressional panels, that involve Trump's firing of former FBI Director James Comey and any related memos. "Consistent with the committee's position since the beginning of or investigation, I welcome their willingness to cooperate", Burr said.

Flynn's lawyer did not immediately return a request for comment.

The subpoena compelled Flynn to turn over private documents related to his relationships to foreign governments. Robert Kelner, Flynn's attorney, stated that the former national security adviser would not "submit to questioning in such a highly politicized, witch-hunt environment without assurances against unfair prosecution".

The committee-which is investigating Russian interference in November's presidential election-issued the subpoena last week. Even with this information, Trump named him national security adviser.

Earlier Thursday, Reuters news agency cited unnamed current and former U.S. officials as saying that Trump election campaign advisers allegedly "were in contact with Russian officials" during "the last seven months of the 2016 presidential race".

Flynn, the former national security adviser, was sacked in February for misleading Vice President Mike Pence about the contents of a December phone call with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

The event that was certain to capture most attention Thursday was set to take place in the afternoon, when Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who named Mueller, will brief all 100 members of the Senate on the inquiry.

After a series of immediate reports, Burr told the Huffington Post he may have spoken too soon and had yet to get a "definitive answer" to the subpoena.

On May 18, sources familiar with the FBI investigation into Russia's role in the election disclosed that Flynn had six previously undisclosed instances of communication with Russian officials between April through November 2016. Things are then passed over to the USA attorney for the District of Columbia, who would be the one to pursue a case.

The top Democrat and Republican on a House oversight committee have said Flynn likely broke federal law by failing to get approval from the US government to accept foreign payments, including $33,000 in 2015 from RT, Russia's state-sponsored television network.
