North Korea says linking cyber attacks to Pyongyang is 'ridiculous'

North Korea's deputy United Nations envoy said on Friday "it is ridiculous" to link Pyongyang with the WannaCry "ransomware" cyber attack that started to sweep around the globe a week ago or the hacking of a U.N. expert monitoring sanctions violations.

Speaking at the United Nations headquarters in New York City, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's deputy U.N. ambassador flatly denied Pyongyang played a part in last week's unprecedented cyberattack, dismissing suspicions raised recently by security researchers in the US and overseas.

"The rolling back of the hostile policy towards DPRK is the prerequisite for solving all the problems in the Korean Peninsula", he said.

North Korea, also known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), has vowed to develop a missile mounted with a nuclear warhead that can strike the mainland United States, saying the programme is necessary to counter U.S. aggression.

Meanwhile, the South Korean Navy revealed a USA nuclear-powered aircraft carrier group was to remain in the vicinity indefinitely, while Seoul's defense ministry warned it was ready to carry out a preemptive strike if it detected a missile threat from North Korea.

Kim said the North would not abide by United Nations resolutions, which "lost their legitimacy, legality and impartiality", until the global community recognizes its right to "self-defensive measures" and the US ends its "provocative maneuvers". Pyongyang is threatening a sixth nuclear test. The agency does not grant patents.

"The most impressive thing that I heard from Tillerson was that sanctions and pressure are not by themselves aimed at harassing North Korea, but are designed to create an opportunity for Pyongyang's development through opening its doors and scrapping its nuclear programme", CNN quoted Hong as saying. It noted that "patent applications are not covered by the provisions of UN Security Council Resolutions".
