Prosecutor saw no chance of extraditing Assange

Swedish prosecutors said on Friday they had dropped an investigation of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange over a rape allegation, but British police said he would still be arrested if he left the Ecuadorean embassy in London where he has been holed up.

In order to avoid extradition, Assange has been living in the Ecuadorean embassy to the United Kingdom in London since 2012.

As NPR's Frank Langfitt reports, Assange has remained at the Ecuadorean Embassy for years out of fear that an extradition to Sweden would spell another extradition, in turn, to the US, "where he could face trial for leaking hundreds of thousands of secret diplomatic and military documents".

Director of Public Prosecutions Marianne Ny said she had chose to "discontinue" the investigation into an alleged sex offence, although it is unlikely to lead to Mr Assange immediately leaving the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he has been living for nearly five years.

The Crown Prosecution Service said that following the Swedish authorities' decision to drop the investigation, a European Arrest Warrant against him was discharged at Westminster Magistrates' Court. British police say they still intend to arrest him, if he leaves the Ecuadorean Embassy.

A former Government lawyer has suggested Ecuador now faces real questions after Sweden dropped its rape investigation into Julian Assange. The Metropolitan Police force says that there is a British warrant for Assange's arrest after he juimped bail in 2012, and it "is obliged to execute that warrant should he leave the embassy".

Sweden's top prosecutor says there's no possibility of arresting Assange "in the foreseeable future", but the case could be re-opened if he returns to Sweden before the statute of limitations expires in 2020.

No. The investigation began after two women accused Assange of sexual offenses during a 2010 visit to Stockholm - allegations he denies.

Assange is still inside the Ecuadorean Embassy in London where he has lived for almost five years. He said the day marked an "important victory", but noted that he still could be prosecuted by the United States.

Army Pvt. Chelsea Manning served seven years in prison for giving classified material to WikiLeaks. "My client is shocked and no decision to (end the case) can make her change that Assange exposed her to rape".

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange speaks as Ecuador's Foreign Affairs Minister Ricardo Patino listens, during a news conference at the Ecuadorian embassy in central London August 18, 2014.

"Whilst Mr Assange was wanted on a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) for an extremely serious offence, the MPS response reflected the serious nature of that crime".

Samuelsson was not immediately available for further comment. But he also believes the United States wants to extradite him to face charges related to WikiLeaks' publication of classified American documents.

British police kept up a round-the-clock guard outside the embassy until December 2015, when the operation was scaled back partly because of the costs, which had exceeded 11 million pounds (over $17.5 million at the time).

"In view of the fact that all prospects of pursuing the investigation under present circumstances are exhausted, it appears that it is no longer proportionate to maintain the arrest of Julian Assange in his absence".
