Prove reliability of EVMs in front of global experts

"The machine used by the AAP to demonstrate that an EVM can be hacked was not really an EVM used by the Election Commission. The people of this country deserve free and fair elections", said Rai, party's Delhi convenor.

Participating in a discussion on the issue during the day-long special session of the Delhi Assembly, AAP MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj claimed that a voting machine can be manipulated by simply feeding it with a "secret code".

One demand that is sure to come up at the all-party meeting on Friday is that EVMs be done away with altogether, and only ballot papers be used in polls henceforth - something the AAP had called for before the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections.

The EC rejected AAP's EVM tampering claim, saying the "look-alike" gadget demonstrated in the assembly was not its machine. "But if they can be (tampered with), it will be out in front of the world", he added. Several parties, including AAP, BSP and Congress had blamed tampered machines for the victory of BJP in the recently-held assembly polls.

"The Commission has assured political parties that their concerns and apprehensions regarding EVMs have been taken note of and would be duly considered and addressed through the forthcoming challenge and further necessary action will be taken", Nasim Zaidi said after the meeting.

"Such so called demonstrations on extraneous and duplicate gadgets which are not owned by the ECI can not be exploited to influence our intelligent citizens and electorate to assail or vilify the EVMs used by the Commission in its electoral process", it added.

The Election Commission has been claiming that EVMs are tamper-proof and had challenged that it be proven otherwise by parties making allegations about rigging.

The Union Cabinet had given its nod to sanctioned funds of almost Rs. 3,200 crore to procure more than 16 lakh VVPATs as sought by the Election Commission.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Vandana Chouhan told ANI that if the elections become transparent though VVPAT, then the party will agree with it.

Though the light flashes against the button which is pressed by the voter, the vote may not necessarily go to that party, said Bhardwaj. They gave us demonstration on new EVMs which gives a shows the slip for only 7 second. Even the use of the voter verifiable paper audit trail, which has been made mandatory for all future elections by the EC, has not been able to help in this, he claimed.

The demands included that the commission should allow technical inspection of its EVMs by the expert panels of various political parties to see if EVMs can be hacked.

While the election commission has not filled the "weak" points of the whole EVM theory, the opposition has the edge.
