State unemployment rate drops to 4.6 percent in April

Washington state's unemployment rate dropped to 4.6 percent last month and the state added 1,200 new jobs. The participation rate has improved by 1.5 percentage points from April 2016, the state reported.

The April 2017 rate showed significant improvement over the 5.0 percent rate in OR a year ago.

California's unemployment rate fell to 4.8 percent and nonfarm payroll employment fell by 16,300 jobs in April, according to data released today by the California Employment Development Department (EDD) from two surveys.

Economists had forecast a jobless rate of 5.9 per cent on a 5000 job rise in employment.

MA had the only unemployment rate increase (+0.3 percentage point) in April, BLS said on Friday.

"This continues to indicate that workers are entering or rejoining the labor force and many are finding work", Condon said in a statement.

Officials say the state's leisure and hospitality sector had the largest month-to-month increase last month, growing by 1,600 jobs. The unemployment rate is a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicator that reflects the number of unemployed people as a percentage of the labor force.

Solid hiring nationwide led unemployment rates to touch record lows in three USA states last month. Other sectors with gains were retail trade (+900) and information (+400).

Jobs in educational and health services rose by 7,000, mostly in health care and social assistance.




Florida job postings showed 244,758 openings in April 2017.

Statewide, the unemployment rate last month was 4.5 percent, and the nationwide rate was 4.1 percent.

South Carolina's job growth slowed in April, increasing at a 1.4 percent clip.

Construction and mining posted the largest jobs gain, 2,800, to 62,500, up 4.7 percent.

Those figures were revised down by 5,000 jobs, to a total loss of 12,500.

Still, state labor economists emphasized that CT gained jobs steadily over the year.

Seven industry sectors reported job declines over the month, down a total of 37,900 jobs.

"The reason I mention this is that previous year (2016), [the Vermont Department of Labor] announced two preliminary rate increases - one in June and another in August".
