Things to Know About Joe Lieberman

The updates came from Trump as he addressed the media after a White House meeting with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos.

Joe Lieberman, who served as a Democratic senator from CT for many years and was once the party's 2000 vice presidential nominee, is one of the key finalists to be named the next director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the prospect is upsetting many of his former colleagues.

Trump met on Wednesday with Lieberman and three other candidates: current acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe; Frank Keating, the former governor of Oklahoma who previously served as an FBI agent and in high-level positions in the Justice Department; and Richard McFeely, who served in the FBI for 24 years before retiring as executive assistant director in 2014.

Joe Lieberman gives a "thumbs-up" as he leaves the West Wing of the White House in Washington, Wednesday, May 17, 2017.

The 75-year-old former congressman, who would be hired to serve a 10-year term, is well-liked among both Democrats and Republicans, according to Politico, although CNN notes that he is not particularly popular among Democratic voters, as he lost a Senate primary in 2006, the last time he ran as a liberal.

Lieberman spent most of his political career as a Democrat, but endorsed Republican presidential candidate John McCain in 2008.

Trump said he was about to name a replacement for Comey, another move to settle the waters.

The bigger question is why Trump would bother to push Lieberman at all.

Lieberman may be best remembered as former Vice President Al Gore's running mate during the 2000 presidential election and his time as a senator from CT.

Most voters disapprove of Trump sharing intel with Russians: A new Morning Consult/Politico poll found a majority of voters say it was "inappropriate" for Trump to share highly classified information with Russian officials. The White House says President Donald Trump will be interviewing four potential candidates. If his nomination is made official, Lieberman would have to be approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee, then confirmed by the full Senate. "That tells me a lot", said Sen.

Lieberman now works at NY law firm Kasowitz Benson Torres, which has represented Trump.

Politico also surmises that Democrats are still bitter over Lieberman's distancing himself from several Obama policies over the last few years, including the Iranian nuclear deal and Obamacare. Thanks to Harry Reid, it only takes 51 votes in the Senate to confirm presidential appointments, as Democrats keep finding out to their chagrin in 2017.

President Trump expressed displeasure at the naming of a special counsel during a news conference at the White House, saying he believes "it divides the country". Keating earned a law degree from OU, and has also worked under former presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.
