Tornadoes in Wisconsin, Oklahoma leave two dead

One person died at the mobile home park, the Wisconsin Emergency Operations Center said in a statement late Tuesday.

In Elk City, a community of about 13,000 people roughly 110 miles west of Oklahoma City, Matt Bynum considers himself lucky.

A mobile home is a particularly unsafe place to be during a tornado, according to the National Weather Service.

Fire Chaplain Danny Ringer told reporters at the scene that one person was known to have been killed due to the twister.

The subdivision and the rural area surrounding have reported tornado damage, besides some outbuildings and homes are also severely damages pulling the utility lines and poles down.

The weather service says the twister packed winds of 120 to 130 miles per hour, or even slightly stronger, when it hit the trailer park near Chetek on Tuesday evening.

Tornadoes reportedly touched down in five states Tuesday night, including Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas, in addition to Wisconsin.

There were 26 reports of tornadoes Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service, as a massive severe storm system tore through an area from the South Plains of Texas to the Great Lakes.

"There was several trailers here that were gone, and not here anymore", said Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald says many emergency crews are on hand.

Officials in Barron County and neighboring Rusk County have declared a state of emergency. Cattle are killed, but there is no report of people being injured.

Mikles was killed after he chose to leave his mobile home in a pickup to seek shelter in the area about a mile north of State Highway 152 and just east of Merritt Road in a rural area. "The storm destroyed a home in Western Oklahoma was the cause of the death of the man who tried to escape to a safe place", - stated in the message.

A turkey barn was destroyed by a possible tornado that hit near Chetek, Wisconsin, on May 16, 2017.

Scattered tornadoes have been reported in the nation's midsection.

Chetek Mayor Jeff Martin said he couldn't believe what the storm left behind.

Sirens went off Monday in the Chetek area about 25 minutes before the powerful storm hit about 5:33 p.m.

First Baptist Church of Elk City is opening a shelter for people affected by Tuesday's storms.
